Problem installing Flash Player to Mac OS X

I have a MacBook Air running OS X 10.8.5 and Safari 6.0.5  When I try to download Flash Player (necessary, for example, to use BBC iPlayer) from Adobe's website the download fails to initialise, it just continuously represents the "initialising" blue bar, which flashes off after a few seconds and then flashes back on again. This continues without progressing through to the next stage. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, how did you fix it? Thanks.
