    Hardware/Driver Issue

    Shane P Community Member

      Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me with an issue I am having.

Up until about a week or 2 ago I was running CS6 on Win Vista 64. Everything ran very smoothly. I wanted to upgrade to CC so I did a clean install of Win 7 Pro and installed the necessary audio/video drivers. I then downloaded the CC Apps which I use, AU being one of them.

I just tried to use AU for the first time as I have to edit a project and I opened the project without issues. When I hit the play button to playback a track I received a warning dialogue (please see image). When I clicked "OK" to open the hardware preferences the tracks started playing back and sounded like the chipmunks lol. I am not an audio guy so I am unsure of the proper terminology. Anyway, I wasn't sure what setting(s) need to be adjusted so I clicked "cancel". After clicking cancel the playback stopped.

I know it is not AU and I just have something configured wrong in the audio set up somewhere.

I'm not sure what is not configured correctly and I know it can be a multitude of things, but I was wondering if anyone can see my screencaps and have an idea where I should start looking?

I also have PP and AE installed. When I edit in PP I edit with my headphones on and the audio plays back fine.

I looked at my device manager and it says I have RealTek audio and that the "Device is working properly" . I also attached a screen cap of that.

If you need any more specific info I will be happy to provide it. Just not sure what you would need. I know this is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but any assistance would be appreciated.

      Shane

You'll probably just need to make certain that Windows is configured for the same sample rate as Audition and your project.  To verify this, first right-click on the Speaker icon and select Playback Devices.

Next, select your RealTek device and click Properties:

Then click the Advanced tab and select the 44100 Hz option.  Click OK, then click the Recording tab and repeat these steps.  You may need to Enable the microphone or line input options for your RealTek device for them to be available to Audition and other audio applications.

Then launch Audition and let us know if you get better results.

Thank you very much for your response and attempt to assist.

I did as you suggested and relaunched Audition and I was receiving the same harware warning upon launch.

I then opened the "Device Output" and by default it had "Speakers" selected as shown in the screencap. I then tried switching to the either of the other options, closing and relaunching each time and that did not help. I figured that can't be it and set it back to "Speakers" and it worked. I can now play back my tracks just fine...go figure.

I have no clue why it works now as that is what was originally selected and when I changed the sample rate it still didnt work. Well I don't know why it's working now, but it is!

Thank you again for trying to assist,

            Shane

Can you attach a screenshot of the Windows Playback Properties panel as well?

Is this what you are referring to?

Very close.  Click on "Speakers" and click on Properties then Advanced and let's see that screen as well.

The error in Audition states that your audio device doesn't have any output channels available, which A) Doesn't make sense since it has an output device selected and B) Wouldn't explain why you hear playback, albeit at the wrong playback speed.  Perhaps also open Preferences in Audition, click on Audio Channel Mapping and let us know what's visible there.

I will post the requested screencaps in the morning. I'm not at my work station and I remoted in and the audio properties only shows the remote. Thank you again for all of your assistance.

Here are the requested screencaps. Hopefully they will shed some light. Sorry for the delay.

The first thing to do is set the Sample Rates of Audition and your Windows driver to match.  Right now, Windows is set to 48000 Hz and Audition looked to be 44100 Hz.

And Audition certainly sees the output channels.  Does that error only appear when you open the session file?  If you launch Audition and create a new multitrack session, do you get that message?  If not, I'm guessing the session was built with a different audio device or has output channels manually assigned to tracks or busses that no are no longer available.  I can't tell for certain from the session screenshot attachment, though - we'd need to see the Track panel Output parameters:
