1. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
Dov Isaacs Oct 17, 2013 2:44 PM (in response to therealrgbk)Since this doesn't appear to be a universal problem, perhaps you can share some information about your system's configuration including platform, screen resolution (and video card), version of InDesign, and which fonts you are seeing this with?

2. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
therealrgbk Oct 17, 2013 2:51 PM (in response to Dov Isaacs)I have worked on several mac in the last ten years, it's always been there, that kind of deteriotion and lack of finesses on heights. I'm currently on a MBP retina, I'm using a thunderbolt display. Keep in mind, because InDesign has an idiosyncratic (special... backward...) way of interpreting dpi, i have to work at a false zoom which shows my page at a werid %, cos if i do it at actual pixels 100% true, it doesn't render 1px at 1px. This probably doesn't help. But even at InDesigns '100%' it does this.
Illustrator does this too by the way. But not photoshop, chrome, safari, preview, and any other program.

3. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
sandeecohen Oct 17, 2013 4:07 PM (in response to therealrgbk)I've been able to reproduce what you're seeing, but only when I create a user error.
The top line is Helvetica Neue with small caps applied. There is an initial cap on each word.
The second line is Helvetica Neue with small caps applied, but only the lowercase (small cap) letters are used.
The bottom line creates the effect you're seeig. The O and S are capital letters inserted into the lowercase letters of the small cap text.
Are you sure you're not seeing this? Try selecting all the text and choose Type > Change Case > Title Case. See if that fixes what you have.

MW Design Oct 17, 2013 4:24 PM (in response to therealrgbk)I don't get this at all but I use Windows. Never have gotten this effect, actually.
Are the fonts OTF, TT, T1?

6. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
therealrgbk Oct 17, 2013 4:27 PM (in response to MW Design)Helvetica is the actual system font, Helvetica Bold Neue LT is a full family made ironically by Adobe Systems and is Open Type.

7. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
Dov Isaacs Oct 17, 2013 4:31 PM (in response to therealrgbk)I have never seen anything like this in my use of any version of InDesign (going back to the beta release of 1.0) with any of the fonts I use either on Windows (my primary platform) or MacOS.
Will need to see whether installing and using Helvetica Bold Neue LT yields similar results on my systems.

therealrgbk Oct 17, 2013 4:52 PM (in response to Dov Isaacs)What is a designer to do? I've had this on multiple machines, like I've said. I'd love to see just plain old Mac OS X Helvetica at the setting i've shown above just to see I'm not crazy.

10. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
therealrgbk Oct 17, 2013 4:54 PM (in response to MW Design)YEah, I'm gonna check the same fonts on my colleagues machines and try figure this one out. I'm really surprised this isn't a global issue and 'it's just me'. I'd just love to have nice rendered type.

11. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
Joel Cherney Oct 17, 2013 5:09 PM (in response to therealrgbk)I see it from time to time, and only at some zoom levels, and only on some fonts. Never ever ever on my comparatively recent cut of Helve Neue. I often see it on Adobe's Chinese fonts, oddly enough.
We had a thread about this a few years ago that I can't find.

12. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
sandeecohen Oct 17, 2013 5:14 PM (in response to therealrgbk)I'm with Dov on this. I've been pushing and pulling and playing with all variations of Helvetica and Neue and I can't replicate what you're seeing.
The only thing close, I've been able to do, is when I export as a JPEG. But I'm not surprised if rasterizing causes problems.
How old is this version of Helvetica and Helvetica Neue that you're using?

13. Re: Simple question: Why (oh why) does type render so ugly in InDesign?
phil cote Aug 19, 2014 10:18 AM (in response to therealrgbk)Nope, you aren't crazy. I also noticed that for YEARS on many, many Macs and InDesign's font rendering always looked ugly to me as well. I sometimes revert to using Illustrator because we can actually change the default font rendering (Sharp) to Crisp.
