Virus warning linked to codec or video driver

A virus that locks your file and makes you pay ransom to get the unlock key

CryptoLocker attacks typically come in three ways:

      3) Most recently, you’re tricked into downloading a malicious video driver or codec file.

Indeed... and one more reason to never download a "codec pack" or video device driver from some "random" source... only specific downloads from the actual vendor sites

            Some interesting information.

Sounds like a good reason to NEVER click on one of those "UPS, DHL, USPS," scam e-mails, about some delivery, or to download and install any CODEC pack.

It will be interesting to see how quickly the computer security world can step up, to get blockers, cleaners and unlocker into place. Hope that Norton, McAfee, et al, can come up with both protection and then removal tools.

It also seems that the level of extortion is going up. The first ransom was US $30, then $100 and now $300. Also, if one is nefarious enough to extort $ with such an operation, who is to say that they would not leave a payload behind, that pops up next month, but the price is US $600 instead? Since this thing was discovered in early Sept., it seems that it has "grown."

I have a lot more comments on this matter, but the language is not fit for the Adobe Forums, and many of my views would be considered horribly "politically incorrect," so I will refrain, and just have a glass of wine instead. That should spare Jeff, Jim and Ann the task of having to edit me.

            Thank you for the H/U.
