1. Re: PAL to NTSC
Richard M Knight Nov 1, 2013 8:01 AM (in response to av8ercfi)I have been disappointed with any software conversion that I have tried for HD PAL to NTSC. I always end up using a Snell Alchemist ( about £300 hr running time for a Post house to do the work)

JSS1138 Nov 1, 2013 9:21 AM (in response to av8ercfi)Just don't do it man. A rare project once in a while is one thing, but you'd not want that hassle or possible degradation for everything you do.

Yep...far better to stick with the inherent NTSC degradation as opposed to creating it.
BTW - what made you think PAL cams were cheaper than NTSC capable cams?
I have cameras that can do both FWIW.

That's not so much an issue any more with the HD specs, where the only real difference now is the frame rate. And we have the option of the worldwide film standard of 24 fps, which PAL does not.

shooternz Nov 1, 2013 7:59 PM (in response to JSS1138)Nice bite...can I reel him in...
24fps certainly makes more sense than 29.97 or 23.48 or whatever the crazy drop frame number is.

8. Re: PAL to NTSC
JSS1138 Nov 1, 2013 8:05 PM (in response to shooternz)Agreed. That's why I use a patch for my GH2 that records at exactly 24 fps instead of the oddball 23.976.

av8ercfi Nov 2, 2013 7:46 AM (in response to shooternz)Checking the B&H site. Looking at the Sony HMC2000U, $1649.00, MC1500E, $1369.00.
Gonna stick with NTSC. Not worth the savings for the agony of transcoding.
Joe
