Cannot open my PPRO CC project anymore

    noarprodz Community Member

      Hello everybody,

Premiere Pro CC crashed during my work on a big project (french TV show). When I tried to reopen my project, Premiere start normally, begin opening the project (orange bar loading) and when the orange bar is approximatively arround 20% of loading, Premier hangs and nothing happend. So I can't open my project anymore.

      - I've checked my Auto save and they are too old to start over from

      - I tried to unzip my corrupted PRPROJ file (rename XXX.zip and extract, then add .xml extension) and open the extracted xml in XML Wrench. Run the integrity tests in XML wrench and everything is ok.

      - I tried the MAC software "Pro Maintenance Tool" from Digital Rebellion to repair my project. The software tells it's repair but the new project doesn't open, exactly as the old one...

      - I tried to import the corrupted project in a blank new one -> start loading then freeze

      - I tried to open the windows corruped project in a Mac version, on an other disk, without medias : same problem.

      - I'm trying to scan the delete file in my project folder hoping that PR has left some footprints of any temporary files while saving my corrupted project, before the crash...

I'm completely lost and can't afford to spend more time trying to recover my project. Does anybody have an idea to save my life ? ...

My corrupted project can be downloaded here :

      My configuration :

      Premiere Pro CC 7.1

      Windows 8.1

          Hi noarprodz,

          Welcome to the forums.

Do you have after effects installed on you machine? If yes,

Impory the project in after effects and then export it as Premiere pro project. Also, you can try moving the used media to any other drive, making them offline and then try opening the project in Premiere pro.

          Regards,

          Vinay

The project file seems to be fine. It loaded successfully for me.

New day, new crash... many crashes in fact... :-(

My project is getting bigger everyday. My last tests returned the following results :

                • Crashes often happend after CTRL-Z command. Not everytime but this is the major cause of Premiere Pro CC 7.1 getting freezed.
                • The problem is no doubt the project file itself. A crashed project takes long time to open even on another machine with different media cache, different OS and no media attached (only the project and no source)
                • The problem is more frequent on big project file (1h timeline with many audio and video clips
                • The problem happens in a project without any third party plugin
                • The problem is not caused by warp stabilizer
                • The broken project file can be restored by simply waiting (a very long moment...) on the load (orange loading project bar)
                • The broken project can't be open by AME, After Effects
                • The broken project can't be import in a new empty one on Premiere (long wait also)
                • The autosaves created every minutes (for my test...) are also very long to open, just as the crashed project (I've tested the 30 last autosaves... so 30 minutes back in time)

Here are few leads that nead to be follow :

                • A broken project (after the crash) and the restored project (restored by waiting 1 hour to load it, and resave with new name) have different file size !! In my case, the crashed one is 5 795 Ko and the restored one is 3 355 ko
                • The XML file obtained by unzipping the 2 prproj files with winrar have also 2 different sizes : crashed one is 97 535 Ko and restored one is 76 073 Ko

So I think the crash is link with some autosave feature or history feature maybe saved in the project file ? I really don't know how the new prproj files are organized...My next step :

                • compare the two project files : crashed and restore (prproj and extracted xml from these prproj files) with an file comparison software and examine what are the differences between the two files. The problem is that these are huge files (97 mo...) for a file comparison software...

Anybody got a suggestion ? Adobers please help !!!!

                Thank you...

Thank you for posting. I'm adding that I am experiencing identical issues.

During an 'Undo' action, Premiere Pro CC 7.1.0 (141) randomly locks and I have to force quit. (this has happened 4x since 11/19, today is 11/20) After that, upon reopening the .prproj, the 'Loading Project' status bar holds at about 1/3 complete for 45-55 minutes before the project re-opens. Once saved, the .prproj again opens normally.  The stalled re-opening has happened with the same .prproj file on two identical machines (the 2nd running PrPro 7.0.1(105), however, the lockup on the 'Undo" action has only happened on one of the two. I as well have two different file sizes, the crashed filesize=8.6MB, the saved(post re-open) filesize=6.3MB

I have uninstalled Premiere Pro, utilized the Adobe Cleaner Tool, reinstalled, and experienced the same symptom when re-opening a crashed project file.  I have not yet resumed editing to see if the 'Undo' crash issue will continue after the reinstall. I will update my reply as necessary.

Also noticed that "Adobe QT32 Server" process is not responding in my Activity Monitor on OSX

New day, new tests... Here is my daily report :

Yesterday I worked on this project avoiding to do any UNDO action ! (hard...) I noticed that during the day, my project started to 4.3 MB and finished to 25 MB at the end of day ! Before going to sleep, I saved my project, closed Premiere and reopen my project. As usual, loading hanged on the orange bar... This was arround 2 AM in the morning.

8 AM this morning. The orange bar is still at the same position and my project is not open... That's 6 hour loading... No really cool and I have to send some stuff to my producer at 11 AM :-(

So I decided to to one last thing :

                    • Ungzip the prproj file with WinRAr to extract the xml file
                    • Add .xml extension to the extracted file
                    • Open this xml file with an editor (XML Wrench) and see what's wrong.

                    Here are my conclusion :

                    • The XML file extracted is veeerrrry large for a project : 276 MB !!
                    • There are lots (and lots and lots and lots) of lines like : <Link Index="NNNN" ObjectRef="NNNNN"/> (NNNN are numbers of course)

                    Lots of lines means exactly : 4 200 029 !!!!!! Hum... that's crazy...

So... nothing to loose, I decided to

                    • cut theses lines and let only the few first ten
                    • save the cutted xml file and rename it to XXX.prproj
                    • Reopen the new prproj file...

And... tadddaaaam. My project loaded in a few seconds as it should be !! Nothing lost, everything is fine. Then after a new save in Premiere, my project is back as its original size that's to say : 4.1 MB

So Adobe : what are these f******* milion of <Link Index="NNNN" ObjectRef="NNNNN"/ lines ??? and why does they come after UNDO commands ?

                    noar

PS : Don't know if it can help you but in this weird project, I did some XML import of footage. Maybe that's a lead ?

Oh I forgot. Big up to all the Adobe technical staff who helped me so much to understand where did this Premiere Pro CC bug came and how to work over it... no I'm joking . Except daveinsacto who learned to me that he's got the same issue on his machine (a Mac) no one at Adobe helped me. 65 euros per month for the CC and no one to help except... me.

Finally I got a temporary solution thanks to... myself, 1 week of tests, a huge waste of time on my project. I'm very angry right know. Feel that I did Adobe developper's job, besides my editor's job...

But I'm not selfish ! So If the Adobe Premiere technical staff or developpers want to contact me, or retrieve some tests projects (crashed ones, restored ones, xml ones, etc.) I can send them. My point is now to help people getting Premiere better or give people solutions to override Premiere's bugs...

                      Production can't afford to wait...

                      Thanks.

                        @noarprodz,

I understand your frustrations with getting quality assistance on fringe issues such as this. Definately slows production, I lost 2 days of creative on one of 14 episodes on which we are on a  2wks3dys schedule for each episode from raw footage to fine/online cut.

I have access friendly adobe reps/engineers here in SF and will communicate with them these issues, as they have clearly been recent.

On your 7.1.0 version of CC, what number build is it? Mine is (141). Also, check your Task Manager and see if you also are experiencing an unresponsive program called "Adobe QT 32 Server"

Best of luck, and I shall update this thread with any helpful info and feel free to contact me direct.

                          Dave,

I'm not angry about you in particular ! You're finally the first one to help me. So thank you for that.

My 7.1.0 Premiere CC is also build 141

                          Working on

                          • Windows 8.1 x64
                          • 2 x xeon E5 2630@2.3 GHz
                          • 32 GB Ram
                          • Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 4 Go
                          • 2 TB Raid 0 stripped ensemble (2 disks)

While the project freezes on load, nothing wrong on the Task Manager. Premiere is OK and all others Adobe task too. That's the first thing that made me realize that Premiere was doiing something and was not crashed. I noticed too that when it hangs on load, the red hardisk led of my computer is blinking sometimes...

Thank you. I'll be gratefull if you could try my trick (extract xml and remove the "LinkIndex=" lines (like described above) and reopen the project. Just to be sure that this trick works also on Mac.

                          See you.

                              noar,

I have completely flushed my machine of all things adobe, including flash and acrobat. I first followed this page for the cleaner tool, which I have used before:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation -problems.html

Choose clean everything for all adobe products.

I also used (for mac):    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows. html    to remove flash player...not certain if that was necessary, but I figured there are likely some shared directories that I would be deleting, so I let the adobe product do the job before I did it manually.

From there, I went as far as removing all adobe system/user libraries. I first copied those files to a seperate drive prior to deleting them.  I also copied the media cache files prior to deletion so that my footage would not need to re-conform on reopening the project files. I am osx, so the paths will differ, but I believe from memory, that the adobe library filestructure is very much the same on both platforms.

                              Screen Shot 2013-11-21 at 2.01.38 PM.png

                              Screen Shot 2013-11-21 at 2.02.17 PM.png

From there, I ran a disk utility (defrag), recycled my machine, re-installed creative cloud, then premiere, after effects, photoshop, bridge, extention manager, and audition.

After the full re-install, my saved project files (pre-'undo' crash, or reopened from crash and saved) opened much faster than before, peak files and conform files ran much faster. The software is much more responsive.  I have not experienced an 'undo' issue as of yet and i will certainly update if I do. However, the Adobe QT32 Server is still on lockdown, so that will take further involvement with the adobe engineers to understand what that issue causes or doesn't. Also, the copy I had saved of a 'crashed' file tried to open just the same, so I'm considering that file corrupt and have removed it from my system, as well as all associated autosaves.

Hopefully you are back to editing! What's your show called?

                              Cheers.

The bug that noarprodz isolated so impressively is fixed in the CC7.2 update. Afflicted projects should be fixed by opening them in 7.2 (and remain compatible with 7.1 if you have occasion to return to that version.

This is my first time on the forums so forgive me if I'm doing this wrong. I am working on a commercial project with a tight deadline. I have about 25 sequences with edited footage around 2 hours. My biggest project to date. My project file takes over 5 minutes to load. I am running CC7.2.1 on a macbook pro retina with a usb 3 external drive (non raid).  Once the project is up, it runs great. I'd prefer not to have to remove all adobe applications and reinstall to speed up the load time. Any suggestions?
