Stupid problem with creating object from paths

    paulwieczorek

      Hello!

Recently I've started learning Illustrator and got a few problems, though I have massive experience with graphic design. I've read probably all forum threads and Adobe help on this topic but still can't find the solution.

      The problem is:

      - I have an object created from various paths and want to make it ONE SINGLE vector, so I could cut it through in InDesign. When I try to combine it with compound path or compound shape, it gets me error or unwanted background under the whole shape, the UNCLICKABLE background or empty paths without any possibility to fill it with color. I can't remove it, even clicking through all levels of group and trying to select it with white arrow. I lost at least few hours trying to find the solution for this but I'm helpless at the moment and need to figure it out ASAP 'cause I got serious assignment to be done.

Below are the screenshot of what happens if I want to create compound shape:

P.S. "Sciezka" stands for "Path" and "Ksztalt zlozony" for "Compound Object", "Grupa" for "Group".

      Regards!

      Paul

          Cześć Pawel,

Sounds like what you desire is one compound path

          1. release all compounds and groups
          2. swlect all the innner shapes between spokes and the one under teh seat
          3. group and hide this
          4. select the one outer shape adn hide this
          5. select all remainig objects and delete
          6. show all, confirm outer shape is in back by filling with color adn group is in front
          7. make compound, or either use pathfinder with minus front

Though I can speak decent Polish, like a farmer, never seen an Eastern European version of Illustrator, thanks.

Assuming that the gaps between the spokes are transparent, what does Pathfinder (palette) Unite do for you?

Assuming that the gaps between the spokes are NOT transparent but grey, what does make compound path do for you?
