Search on webapp items with multiple subitems

I have a Property WebApp where each property can have multiple units. I  need to be able and search the square footage of the individual units.

Unfortunately if each property unit will be a webapp item custom field, you'll have problems using search. The problem is already documented here: http://support.muse.adobe.com/message/4380968
