Hi, I have opted out of Creative Cloud and decided to use just CS6 instead. Now a couple of files where created in newer versions (
as I had automatic upgrade in CC) which to my horror I cannot open now. Is there a way to open them without having to reactivate CC? Thanks for your help.

No. They need to be exported out of CC as IDML.

Thanks for the quick response.
I guess ranting is not allowed so I'll do that somewhere else.

Rant all you want. It won't change the facts, though.

You could probably download the trial, or worst case buy a month of use, and make sure you convert all the new files before it runs out.

Thanks Peter for some ideas,
Another one is to ask a friend working with CC to convert my files. All of it is rather inconvenient if in a hurry and I wonder if necessary, if not for marketing reasons, that's all.

There are very technical reasons why InDesign file formats need to be
changed from one version to the next. It has been this way since version
1.0.

I know it has been like that always as I have upgraded in average about every second year to the next version since I had my first own version I think around 4 or so. The change to the subscription system however is a big change that I tested and found not right for me, comparing actual* additional benefit and cost over time. *(I say actual, because having access to all Adobe products is of course a fantastic concept but the reality of actually needing them, and if so, having the time to learn and use them is another story.) So I was just hoping Adobe would have maybe considered a helpful conversion solution for long term customers who are happy to stick to CS6. But I guess you gave me the ansewer, Bob, I can rant all I want, it won't change the facts.

@blauraum – if you doing the export (in CC it's saving) to IDML, don't forget to export to PDF as well. Afterwards you could place the PDFs in the opened IDML (now indd file) to compare the conversion to the "original". Expect some changes…
For batch converting to IDML and PDF there is a script by Peter Kahrel:
Peter Kahrel
Batch-process (convert/export) documents (CS3 and later)
http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/batch_convert.html
If delivering "open" files to someone else, there should always be a "triad" of files:
*.indd
*.idml
*.pdf
*.indd for the people who work with the same version of InDesign.
*.idml for the people with older (CS4 and above) or newer versions.
*.pdf for all participants to show how the pages should be looking (no missing fonts, no missing images, no missing or different rendered features)
