brad simon Nov 21, 2013 12:33 PM (in response to P Spier)I have InDesign on another computer that I set up a year ago and I was able to successfully disable or override them then, but I can't remember how I did it. On that computer, I have it working like I want. I'm just trying to do the same thing on this new computer.

sandeecohen Nov 21, 2013 12:49 PM (in response to brad simon)Did you happen to read my article on this topic in InDesign Secrets? http://indesignsecrets.com/applying-alt-w-for-preview-in-windows.php
I said that I had no problem using Alt-W in my documents to toggle between Preview and Normal.
What command are you applying with Alt-W? Maybe that is part of the difference.
But I was using Windows 7 with InDesign CC.
It's possible that your configuration changes the behavior.
However, you might want to turn off the "underline" option in your Windows options.

4. Re: How to override Menu Shortcut Keys?
brad simon Nov 21, 2013 1:18 PM (in response to sandeecohen)I did see your article, but in my case, InDesign will assign Alt+W as the shortcut, so I don't need to go into the shortcut file (i.e., your zzzzzzz file) to set it manually. The problem is, even though it is set, InDesign ignores my shortcut and continues to use Alt+W to open the Windows dropdown menu.

Are you sure you assigned Alt-W?
Nobody I know assigns it wthout a little trickery.
Perhaps that's why it's opening the Windows menu. The shortcut isn't actually assigned.

6. Re: How to override Menu Shortcut Keys?
brad simon Nov 21, 2013 3:42 PM (in response to vectorbabe)Well, I'm not sure how to know that for sure. When I go into the shortcut file, both by looking at it through InDesign and looking at the shortcut file in Notepad, both show that the shortcut is set to Alt+W. So, I'm assuming it is.

sandeecohen Nov 21, 2013 4:03 PM (in response to brad simon)Alan Gilbertson just posted a comment over in InDesign Secrets that may explain what's happening.
"It’s not too much of a conflict in Windows 7 or 8.1, as far as I can tell. Press Alt and release, then W: you get the Window menu. Press Alt-W together and you toggle Preview."
Alan Gilbertson just posted a comment over in InDesign Secrets that may explain what's happening.
There's a difference in the order of pressing the keys. Toggling Preview only works if Alt-W are pressed together.

brad simon Nov 21, 2013 4:17 PM (in response to sandeecohen)Well, all the InDesign shortcuts work by pressing the shortcut keys at the same time, so I don't think this is the issue.
