I cannot get Flashplayer 11 to install properly

MY computer says I have no flashplayer and must install the latest version.  Yet, when I go to the list of installed programs, Adobe Flashplayer Version 11.9.900.152 is listed as a program on my machine.  If I try to reinstall it, it installs to the 50% mark and then quits.  It says to close Explorer and then continue.  I close Explorer and hit retry, yet it refuses to go on.  It just keeps repeating the message that I must close Explorer but it is closed.  How do I fix this problem?
