Flash Player won't update...

I can download the installer but when I double-click the download it asks me to verify my update settings.  I have updates set to auto.  The installer initializes, asks to run program (I click run), then it sits for a brief time and displays that flash player can not connect.  What can I do to correct this?

Bypass the downloader/installer altogether.
