    Align Layers in Elements?

    terryandfran@aol.com

What version on Elements do I need to be able to align layers or do I need to buy Photoshop?  I am doing HDR and need to be sure that 5-7 layers match up before using any masking through.  Thanks

You really need Photoshop for HDR. Elements has some basic tools for layer alignment e.g. align, top, bottom, center and distribution etc. which can be useful for page layout. This video tutorial will give you an idea. The photomerge option in elements will auto-align photos when making a panorama.

PS there is currently a great offer on Photoshop CC for a limited period. Click on the link below.

Thanks, I thought that would be the case.  Not very fare is it!

I don't know if this addresses your question but it's a neat trick anyway.

Here I selected an area, did a copy/paste to create a new layer, and moved the new area out of alignment.

              align1.jpg

Turn off the visibility of all layers except the ones to align.

Change the Blending Mode of the mis-aligned layer to "Difference". The areas of the two layers that match exactly will be completely black.

              align2.jpg

Use the arrow keys to nudge the top layer so that the result is all black.

              align3.jpg

Change the blend mode back to "Normal" and the layers are perfectly aligned.

Thanks Mark, looks worth a try.  I was just hoping that a simple thing like 'auto align' would be on later than version 10.

do you mean to align layers based on the content of the layer?

If you have shot your images using a tripod and dont need to align layers based on the content, you can select all the layers that you need to align , select the move tool and then choose align layers (check the image attached below)

If you want to align photos depending upon the content of the layer, you better use auto align feature integrated with Photomege panorama.

Thanks for your advice on the use of a tridod.  My problem is the missmatch between a tonemapped image and the original images used.  When 3/5 exposures are combined in Photomatics Pro 2 , the final image show a slight miss alignment with the layers below.  The layers below may be used to mask in sections of the image to help remove ghousting etc.  In Photoshop I have seen the auto-align tab used which runs an auto script to match the layer below.  This can be important when working of small details in buildings for instance and where the sky meets other elements of the building.  I was just asking if the auto aligh was available in any of the versions of Elements and it seems not.  Thanks Terry

If thats all you want to do,I suggest you to use Photomerge Exposure . In pse10 it should be available in File>new >Photomerge Exposure. In pse 11 and 12 it is placed in Enhance>photomerge>photomerge exposure.

                      Steps:

                      1. open all the image you want to merge. Photomerge Exposure works for 2 to 10 images.
                      2. launch photomerge exposure from the said location.
                      3. in automatic mode, It would automatically align the image and let you use a few sliders to make a perfect blend of the image.
                      4. In manual mode, it would still auto align image but let you manually adjust the alignment using alignment tool. after alignment you would have to manually select different areas from different images to make a blended image.

To know more about photomerge exposure, read the help document at http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/using/enhancing.html#main-pars_heading_4
