What causes projects to be corrupted?

This has happened to me twice in the last few hours in one project.  It's a major time waster, and I'd like to know how to avoid it.

My project is about 1.5MB, and has been approximately that for the last several days.  Then one auto save file jumps to 3.2MB, then the next to 6.1MB.

My project became unresponsive after hitting undo (Cmd-Z).  After 5 minutes of beachball, I force quit.  Reopening the project failed, every time it would stall at the "opening project" progress bar.  I tried trashing preferences, but that didn't matter because it was a corrupt project.  The last 2 auto saves (the large ones) wouldn't open either, but the previous one did.  So I've been working from that.

Two hours later, I have the exact same symptoms.  Freeze after hitting undo, and the most recent project is too large (4.2MB this time).

Both times share one thing that I can think of:  The operation immediately before the undo was using the track select tool to select a lot of clips (around 200 I would guess) and moving them all together.  But I've done that operation many times in the past with no problem.

      I'm running Premiere 7.1.0 on OS X 10.9.0.
