So, how do I download a library book to this device? Instructions clearly
stated I hook up with adobe but when I do, the first step does not appear
where they say it should. Maddening.

Have you installed Adobe Digital Editions? http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/digital-editions/download.html
If you run that and authorize it with your Adobe ID, it should then recognize the ereader when it is plugged in.
