Markers not showing up from emailed project file.

    NickBoston Community Member

I couldn't find an asswer to this but for some reason the clip markers that someone painstakingly put in a Premiere project are now not showing up on my end so i can continue working on the project.

The project file was uploaded to Creative Cloud and i then downloaded it.

I have a notion as to why this is, but I'm hoping someone can confirm this and possibly offer a solution to help us out.

I'm working with .mts files as I shoot onto AVCHD.  So, with those .mts files are corresponding .xmp files in the same folder.  My theory is that the markers get written into the .xmp file and not into the project file somehow.  But interestingly, the markers that were put onto sequences and multi-cam interviews remained.

Im hoping that if I replace the .xmp files they will show up again.  Can anyone offer some advice here?

      Thanks!

Clip Markers are stored with the clip so that they transfer to any program which opens that clip.  This means you'll need them to send the media as well.

            Jim thanks for the reply.

Wow, not fun.  So, my friend who is in another state has to send me his footage so I can see just the markers??  That's frustrating.

Just to clarify:  The markers get stored to the video clip, .mts in this case, and nowhere else. Not even the .xmp files?

Another option might be to export the markers. Prelude allows you to do this with a set of clips selected.

And with the CC7.2 update, Premiere can export the markers from one clip at a time. In PPRO, you select the clip in the Project panel, then go File>Export>Markers.

Just looked into that file export marker option.  Does this still mean I have to have the original footage?  The actual footage that the markers were put on?

The ability to export markers is useful but when it comes to exporting the markers for hundreds of clips it can be very time consuming. Exporting markers one at a time will be painstaking unless there's a way to batch process the workflow. Is there a way to record a custom action such as the one in Photoshop CC but for use on clips in PPRO?

Put all the clips in a sequence.  You'll get all the Clip Markers in one go.

CaptainPinecone is the guy I'm working with on this project!

Opened my folder with 100+ clips>Selected all>Create new sequence from clip, and my sequence will only have one in and out point regardless of the amount of markers set on each clip. And in the case I tried a single clip to sequence, the in and out points did not match the markers in and out points. And in either cases, there was no information such as the marker's "Title", or "Comments".

As noted, Premiere's new Export Markers feature works with only one source at a time. When the Timeline has focus, that could either be the sequence's markers (if no track items are selected) or the markers from a single track item (if only one is selected).

Unless Jim knows some trick that I'm unaware of, there's no way in PPRO to export the markers from all the constituent clips in one go.

If you'd like the ability to export markers from multiple project items, please submit a feature request. The more, the merrier.

The good news is that if you have PPRO CC, you also have Prelude CC, and as noted that app supports exporting markers from multiple selected assets. It gives you the option of writing a separate file for each asset or collecting them all in one file.

CaptainPincone: would you elaborate on what you mean when you say

                            1. "the in and out points did not match the markers in and out points" -- when you export markers with a clip is selected in the sequence, the timecodes in the marker export file correspond to the markers' timecodes in the master clip, not in the sequence. (If you want the option of having the sequence timecodes used in this scenario, that would be another feature request.)
                            2. "there was no information such as the marker's "Title", or "Comments"? I was the tester on this feature and know of no bugs where any marker's content is not written to the marker export file.

Both of those points were in regards to creating a new sequence from a clip. I haven't tried exporting markers from a clip individually because it would not be time efficient for me to individually export markers from 580+ files.

I tried it one time on a sequence, hoping it would work with Encore Chapter Markers.  (It doesn't. )  What I got was what appeared to be a list of all Clip Markers.  I'll take another look to confirm what I did get.

Thank you to all the help we recieved regarding this topic. We came to the decision to meet up and exchange footage for that project, however we tried a different method for our next project.

For our workaround, after creating the project file and importing our footage, I created new sequences and named them as if they were folders to house different types of shots. (People, lights, location, etc.) Instead of setting markers directly to the footage through the Source monitor, I'd set my in/out points and place our footage to the appropriate sequence. From the Timeline, I add my markers because these markers stay with the project file. We believe this may actually help to speed up the process as well because now my editor will be able to bypass watching each clip in several bins to find my markers. He can easily cycle through in points on the timeline while seeing every marker above.

He got the project file last night, linked his footage, and it worked like a charm.

Great! Glad to hear that you developed a workflow that meets your needs. And thanks for sharing.

I was looking at the wrong thing with that Marker export.

Once exporting the markers, how does one import them into a project?  I can't seem to figure that bit out.  There's no "import markers" feature or anything I can find in the Premiere documentation about this.  Premiere won't read a .csv or .html file into the project, nor is there anything in the markers or metadata windows that would let you connect a clip to one of these files.

Is the "export markers" feature intended as a pipeline tool for other apps then?  It would be great to have something that lets you send clip markers back and forth between different projects.  I work for a company that does a lot of remote work and media is frequently on both a travel drive and a big SAN at the office.  Short of training staff on a new workflow as per CaptainPinecone, I don't see a way of getting clip markers to pass between projects accessing identical media living on separate storage devices.

Thanks for all the good discussion so far on this topic!

You don't.  It's just a list for external viewing.  The actual markers are stored with the clip, so if you get those media files, you will see those markers.

Gotcha, so back to the feature requests.  Almost there with this.  Impractical at our shop to ship media back and forth or spend the requisite 5 figures for an Adobe Anywhere setup.  Also hard to train editors who've been working a certain way for 15+ years to mark and edit from sequences rather than clips.  It would be lovely to be able to match those great .csv or .html lists to clips within Premiere eventually.
