How can I enter/display content in book icons? Not just in topics?

In my TOC, I have book icons and topics underneath.

I'd like the books to display content to serve as a kind of "overview" for the topics that come underneath it. How do I enter content for book icons?

Thanks!

You’ll have to create a topic to associate with that book. Here’s one way to do that:

  • Right click the book icon in the Table of Contents (TOC).
  • Point to New in the right-click menu. Then, click Page in the sub-menu that displays.

This places that topic in the level under that book. Now you just need to associate that topic with that book (so that when you click on the book, this topic displays).

  • Right-click the book icon again. This time select Properties in the right-click menu that displays. This displays the TOC Book Properties dialog.
  • Select the checkbox preceding Book with Link on this dialog. Now, scroll through the Existing Topics list to locate the topic you want to associate with that book. Click that topic in the list. Then, click OK on the dialog.

To see if your topic is now associated with your book:

  • Right-click the book icon. If options Edit Item and Preview topic display on the right-click menu, you have been successful in associating that topic with that book. By the way, once you have associated a topic with a book, you must right-click the book icon to view or edit that topic from the TOC pod. (Of course, you can always edit it directly using the Topic List or Project manager pods.)

This helps a lot. Thank you!

How do I then make the Topic not show up in the TOC?

So if I have

Book

Let me try that again...

So if I have

Book

  • Topic 1

And I've successfully linked Book and Topic 1, how do I hide Topic 1 from

the Table of Contents so that users won't see the SAME content on Book and

on Topic

Just delete the topic 1 from the TOC. As it is linked to the book it is still displayed when the book is clicked.

Great that worked!!! Do you know how to keep the table of contents OPEN? so

that all the topics under each book remain open to a user, rather than a

user having to expand/open each book to see what's underneath?

To delete a topic listing in the Table of Contents (TOC), right-click the topic and click Delete in the menu that displays.

Just as a reminder, deleting topics from the TOC does not delete that topic. It only prevents that topic from displaying in the TOC in that location. So if you accidentally delete a topic listing from the TOC, you can always redisplay by dragging that topic name from the Project Manager pod to the location in which you want it in the TOC.

Great. Do you know how to publish a product so that the Table of Contents

remains OPEN--where users see the topics displayed underneath the books,

rather than having to expand/open the books to see the topics underneath?

Want to create a TOC that looks like this:

Thank you!

Hi there

To create a WebHelp output that looks like that, you need to enable Section 508 output.

Cheers... Rick

Rick is right but we haven't identified what type of output you are creating. Knowing that will help us give you an answer.
