Files saved with extention from ACR?

    Maddiex Community Member

Why are my files being saved with extentions _.1 etc from ACR rather than overwriting the original file edited which is what I want - I check the Document NAme box only.

PS cc being used with it's ACR download whatever version that is.

It looks like ACR will not overwrite existing files. If File name.ext exists it will append _1  to file name if that exist it will bump by +1 till it get a  name that is unique.  So Adobe will state its working as we designed it to live with it. Does not matter that ACR is none destructive disk space is cheep these days and we want to sell more cloud space its our bottom line that's important.

You can not save a raw file outside of ACR. If you use ACR to edit the original is not changed, the edits go into an XMP file.  So not clear where you are getting a name change.  If editing in PS you can not save a raw format.  Must save as a jpg, tiff, psd, etc.

Thank you. I should have been clearer, I save as jpegs and then go back into the Raw file and make a few more changes and want it to save as a jpeg to replace the first jpeg but it saves as a new jpeg. What should I be entering instead of Document name? Easy answer is the name of the first jpeg I guess but I do not always know this name when I am in ACR and bear in mind that I am editing the raw file not the first jpeg.

Actually you not going back into ACR you most likely opening a jpg file in ACR and saving a jpeg file with ACR.  ACR will not overwrite files.  Open a RAW file that has never been processed in ACR and use Save Image and choose jpg filetype and leave document name as file name. Then use Save Image again and do the same. As many times as you do you will write a new file and an _sequence will be appended.  ACR does not overwrite files.

When one goes back into ACR from my experience there is no save  button or even an open option just an OK and Cancel buttons exists in the ACR dialog. And frankly if you try to get back into camera RAW without using a smart object you just run into problems. So if you think you may want to get back in ACR with a conversion  Use Open Object or convert a layer to a Smart object layer in cc before using ACR as a filter so it will be a smart filter.  You can set default work-flow option to open as object.   I find the way ACR works with open jpg and Tiff a bit bazaar and error prone id you do not couple it with using smart object layer,   With Smart Object layer where the embedded object is an images file  created via ACR or in CC where a smart object layer has a smart ACR filter.  It easy to get back into ACR and you will see no save or open buttons.

In fact if you use ACR as a normal filter I would call what it does to the layer destructive for it does not seem to save ACR settings it just seems to alter the layers pixels.  Using ACR a second time does not show the last settinf you used all setting ate set to 0.
