1. Re: Opening PDF in Illustrator. Some font characters outlined, some not.
DrStrik9 Dec 21, 2013 2:55 PM (in response to The Real Thorzdad)I have no idea why this would happen. It must be some arcane thing in the way the pdf is saved(?) Have you tried saving the pdf in different ways, to see where the issue is? I guess the solution is to save the file also as .ai.

Monika Gause Dec 21, 2013 3:12 PM (in response to DrStrik9)This happens when ligatures are used.

3. Re: Opening PDF in Illustrator. Some font characters outlined, some not.
The Real Thorzdad Dec 21, 2013 3:25 PM (in response to Monika Gause)That makes sense, I guess. Except, in this case, these were not ligatures. Illustrator is outlining basic, unmodified characters.

6. Re: Opening PDF in Illustrator. Some font characters outlined, some not.
Larry G. Schneider Dec 21, 2013 3:52 PM (in response to The Real Thorzdad)Are there any nearby page items using transparency? This will often cause the outlining to happen. Can you post a screenshot of the file and the Appearance panel?

7. Re: Opening PDF in Illustrator. Some font characters outlined, some not.
The Real Thorzdad Dec 21, 2013 3:59 PM (in response to Larry G. Schneider)No, there are no transparency effects or objects in the final file.
As a matter of fact, the file is purposely made without transparency effects because the printer my client sends the pdf to still uses an ancient RIP that cannot accurately process anything newer than PDF 1.3.
I'm not at my studio right now, so I can't get a screenshot for you.

8. Re: Opening PDF in Illustrator. Some font characters outlined, some not.
Larry G. Schneider Dec 21, 2013 4:09 PM (in response to The Real Thorzdad)Transparency can include Effects such as Drop Shadows. Any thing like that?
