Flash Player Installation for iMac

I am having issues installing flash nplayer on iMac.  Tried installing, have checked system requirements - still nothing and cant use.  Goes through all installations steps ok but cant use it.  When I go to an internet site that requires it is is says "missing plug-in".  Please help - very frustrated!
