1. Re: Which ACR exactly should be used with PSE12?
nealeh Jan 16, 2014 11:13 AM (in response to DavidW7)No secret. Just run Help> Updates and it will install the latest version (currently 8.3).

2. Re: Which ACR exactly should be used with PSE12?
DavidW7 Jan 16, 2014 11:24 AM (in response to nealeh)Many thanks.
The computer on which I normally work is NOT connected to the internet at all.
I use a seperate computer to do any explicit download.
My understanding is that 8.3 is a DNG converter and not an ACR that alows PSE to work directly with the native raw file of a specific camera, as was the case for PSE versions up to and including ver 10 (I skipped 11).
So no more ACRs and working directly with native raw files?

3. Re: Which ACR exactly should be used with PSE12?
nealeh Jan 16, 2014 11:37 AM (in response to DavidW7)No, if you're connected to the Internet then Help> Updates will install the latest Camera RAW Plug-in to PSE allowing direct opening of RAW files (provided your camera is supported). There is ALSO the DNG Converter that can convert RAW files to the DNG format for those versions of PSE that cannot have the latest Camera RAW version.
If you're unable to connect your normal machine to the Internet, then you will be limited to the version originally supplied.
I'm intrigued though as to how you have activated your PSE12 version and signed in. For that you have to be connected to the Internet at least once, else the software will operate as a trial and deactivate after thirty days.

4. Re: Which ACR exactly should be used with PSE12?
DavidW7 Jan 16, 2014 12:08 PM (in response to nealeh)So now I am more confused
The 8.3 you mentioned earlier is listed as DNG Converter ONLY.
That "...latest Camera RAW Plug-in..." you mentioned now (suggesting that it is a separate thing from the DNG Conv. ?) - that is exactly what I asked for its version number so I can download it explicily with any internet connected computer. I don't alow any "stealth" activities on some of my computers which are therefore not internet conneced.
I should not be limited to anything if there are no secrets and I can do explicit standalone downloads (with ANY internet connected computer). Otherwise, if I can do it it ONLY with an "automated" updates etc.' it is a stealth activity and IT IS a secret.
As to your puzzle, it is simple. I just got yesterday the PSE12 and haven't even had the chance to install. Up to PSE10 there was no need to activate. And if there is one now, I would do it through the phone as I did with other products such as from Microsoft. If Adobe would not alow me to do it by phone, or any othere none stealth style, I would return them the product.
Best,
David

5. Re: Which ACR exactly should be used with PSE12?
nealeh Jan 16, 2014 12:17 PM (in response to DavidW7)The Camera RAW Plug-In and the DNG Converter are separate pieces of software that mirror each other with their version numbers - this is because the version number really identifies the supported cameras, and this is common to both pieces of software.
For PSE12 you CANNOT download the 8.3 Plug-in separately on another machine, the only official method is via Help> Updates when running the program on an Internet connected machine.
From what you say I advise you NOT to open your boxed product (if it was boxed). You will have no means to activate it without connecting to the Internet and if that is something you are not prepared to do, even for the few moments it takes to activate, then you should return the product.

6. Re: Which ACR exactly should be used with PSE12?
DavidW7 Jan 16, 2014 12:44 PM (in response to nealeh)So while I was half jokingly writing at first that the Camera RAW file is a secret, as oppose to past generations where they were listed and downloadable explicitly, you are now saying indirectly that these files are a secret, no joking!. I can't follow the logic of such an Adobe's behavior - I couldn't do anything with that file other than using it with their own products anyway.
And yes, I didn't open the box yet although I think Adobe has a 30 days return policy anyway, and especially with activation requirements, they shouldn't have any problem in any event.
Thanks again,
David
