can't download on mac os x 10.9

Hi, I just got the macbook pro and youtube won't let me watch any videos. it says to download adobe flash player, and I whenever I do, youtube still says i need to download it. my preferences show that adobe flash player 12 is on my system, but the adobe site and youtube do not detect it as being downloaded on my laptop. ive uninstalled and reinstalled all day and i dont know what else to do. does anyone know? btw, when i go to safari preferences then security, "allow internet plug ins" is checked.. thanks
