Place in indesign menu item missing in Bridge 5.5

    backelin Community Member

      Hi there.

All of a sudden the Place in Indesign menu item disappeared in Bridge 5.5, and with it my beloved keyboard shortcut (Yes, a keyboard taliban I am).

The startup scripts in the preferences seem to be okay, they are all checked. I have tried resetting the preferences by holding down the alt-key while starting Bridge. To no avail.

I guess that it has something to do with my recent install of the CC-suite.  I've searched the forums and found people with similar upgrade problems, but sadly no solutions. Is there a way to get the menu item back, without uninstalling CC? We serve clients with different versions.

      Kindly

Not aware of a shortcut for Bridge to place in InDesign so you might have created that yourself via the system (MacOS ?)

However, if you have the CC suite installed you should also use Bridge CC (separate download per CC) because for Bridge to match the different Adobe Applications you must use the same suite version. If you try to use Bridge 5.5 with ID CC that leads to trouble and if you have installed Bridge CC there is no need to step back to Bridge 5.5 unless you need the export panel or synchronized windows option that has disappeared from Bridge CC (The Output Module is a separate download for CC).

Also if you have installed both Bridge versions all file type associations in Bridge prefs are dedicated to the latest versions.

Yes indeed. The shortcut was self inflicted on Mac OS.

I followed your advice and downloaded Bridge CC. And voila! The menu item is back. However, it's a pyrrhic victory since it – understandably – only places files in InDesign CC. I tried copying the indesign 5.5 startup scripts to Bridge CC. No success.

I spend most of my time in CS 5.5 so I welcome a solution which either restores the functionality in Bridge CS 5.5 or makes Bridge CC talk to Indesign CS 5.5.

            Anyone?

Think you are out of luck trying to get different versions to talk to each other.  That is why they are new versions, they are diffenret coding.

Various versions should have no impact on each other if used as advertised.

Maybe I was a bit vague. I work in InDesign CS 5.5 and place files from brother Bridge in CS 5.5. Same suite, no cross version trafficking. But the Indesign (5.5) menu item in Bridge CS 5.5 has disappeared. The Illustrator and Photoshop menus are still there. I figured it could be because of the CC Suite (which I rarely use) since people on the forums seems to have had similar problems.

                Any solutions come to mind?

I guess it is OS related since you already refreshed prefs and all Start up scripts seems present (double check if both Bridge and ID have scripts present).

On my system (MacOsX 10.8.5) I have both CC and CS6 installed. I have no problem using Place for both CS6 and CC.

I also don't understand why you still use 5.5 while your CC subscription entitles you to use both CS6 and CC ?? And what problems are you referring to, are this major problems?

Also try system maintenance if you already have not done so. Repairing permissions is crucial, an app like Cocktail can do this automatically on a daily base.

Happy camper now. I finally managed to get it working by replacing the indesign folder in the Startup Scripts (Root/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Startup Scripts/) with an old backed up version. They all look the same, so maybe it was a permissions issue.

I use 5.5 because our main production flow is built around 5.5, with tons of javascripts and applescripts. Because of this our upgrade cycle usually skips every other version. The plan is to get every one onboard the CC-train eventually, but I haven't gotten around to fixing the scripts yet. I guess it all boils down to my laziness...

                    Thanks anyway!
