1. Re: Windows XP, 7 or 8 for PrE 12?
John T Smith Jan 22, 2014 4:45 PM (in response to barbqman)You want a 64bit version of Windows 7 or 8 so you may use more than 4Gig of ram with the program
This is more about Premiere Pro, but the requirements are "similar" - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1369220?tstart=0
If at all possible, do NOT buy a laptop with dual graphics adapters... that causes many people HUGE problems... read below
Dual video problems (some for Premiere Pro, but the idea is the same)

You want Premiere Elements 12 specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit in order for it to be a 64 bit application that can take full advantage of the 64 bit system resources.
Put Premiere Elements 12 on any other Windows operating system, 32 or 64 bit, and it is just a 32 bit application with all the resource limitations of a 32 bit system.
Do you envision this new computer having a firewire port?

barbqman Jan 23, 2014 11:15 AM (in response to A.T. Romano)Thanks John and A.T.R. Those are great insights and will be very helpful. Has any one seen any reason to choose either version of Windows over any other (between XP, 7, 8 or 8.1)?

John T Smith Jan 23, 2014 11:37 AM (in response to barbqman)Regular XP is 32bit and you want a 64bit version of Win7 or 8 or 8.1 (XP 64bit does not always work well for all people)

A.T. Romano Jan 23, 2014 12:11 PM (in response to barbqman)barbqman
If you have specially Premiere Elements 10, 11, or 12 on specially Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, then Premiere Elements becomes a 64 bit application that can take advantage of the added resources of the 64 bit system. That means larger projects get taken to a successful conclusion more often than if that were not the case.
But, do not be misled, Premiere Elements as a 64 bit application on a 64 bit system does not always translate into faster, more a multitasking perk. Nonetheless. often you can stretch the classical recommendations for "not to exceed" pixel dimensions for stills as well as get the larger projects done successfully more often than not.
Always do the tryout before purchase.
Thanks.

Wow!
In reply #1 in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1387013?tstart=0 I suggested...
Download and test the 30 day trial on your computer with your video
In reply #3 you said... (after asking questions in reply #2)
Too premature to be downloading anything yet, especially without more details from you.
and
But, generalization for you "Do not purchase any software without looking at the tryout first."
So which is it... do people have to answer your questions before doing anything else, or should people use the 30 day trial to find out if it works on THEIR computer with THEIR files?

My suggestions are customized to the user and his/her situation according to the details presented by the user.
And the sequence of suggestions build on the prior information.
Answers are in details which need to be build on to reach any particular subsequent suggestion. Premature is an appropriate choice of words when a suggestion is made before the prior facts for a particular situation are known.
In view of that approach, you know the answer to your own question.
Thanks for asking for clarification.

John T Smith Jan 23, 2014 12:41 PM (in response to A.T. Romano)Over in that thread the user said he had problems "With my current program" without specifying that program and, as of right now, Jedi.Spartan045 has not come back and posted a second message to answer anything
So... yes... my advice was correct... see if the 30 day trial would work on HIS computer with HIS files to solve HIS problem

A.T. Romano Jan 23, 2014 1:03 PM (in response to John T Smith)John T. Smith
What you just said only proves my point. There is no rationale for a "look at tryout" to start if you do not know the details of a user situation. But, this is barbqman's thread, not JediSpartan045's. Premature used in this context in the other thread was appropriately placed in context there.
What I wrote in this thread and the other stands as written in a customized fashion and is sound Premiere Elements troubleshooting scheme which has been validated over the years.
I have tried to clarify these points in my post numbered 7 in this thread as well as in this post 9. I hope my replies have given you insights into the situation.
I am glad for the opportunity to work with you and others in the best interests of the Premiere Elements users.

I was afraid of that, the absence of a built in firewire port on today computers.
I have not sought to do DV or HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements.
And, firewire is the only way that users have been able to get that to work for them.
Here is a sampling of the type of article you might find online about this matter...

I am not sure of the success rate of those who opt for a Firewire card.
Please update us on your progress.
Thanks.

12. Re: Windows XP, 7 or 8 for PrE 12?
barbqman Jan 25, 2014 7:00 AM (in response to A.T. Romano)ATR,
I've discovered that the Elitebook line of HP laptops do have Firewire ports. Their Elitebook 8470/8570 models are available with Intel i7 processors. They have a "p" and a "w" version with "w" meaning workstation but I haven't found a good description regarding what the real differences are. The 8470 has a 14" display, the 8570 a 15" display.
Any thoughts on these machines? Has anyone used them with PrE?
Thanks,

A.T. Romano Jan 25, 2014 7:57 AM (in response to barbqman)barbqman
I did some Googling and found specifications for the HP Elitebook 8470/8570
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14304_div/14304_div.pdf
There are Premiere Elements problems that have been posted caused by the use of two video cards in the system. From the specifications here I am not sure if the computer comes with an integrated (Intel) and discrete (AMD) videos. If so, you might have to disable the Intel one?
As for the 1394a port. Sounds good, but... I think that you need to contact HP support about the availability of that particular model as well as any reports on its use with DV or HDV capture firewire into Premiere Elements.
Although I have seen reports of users looking for computers with a built in firewire port, I have not seen this HP product mentioned in those discussions as an answer in the marketplace that seems to have abandoned computers with built in firewire ports.
More later.

barbqman Feb 8, 2014 8:29 AM (in response to A.T. Romano)I did purchase the HP Elitebook 8570. It works great. It's firewire port works directly with my TR7000 camcorder under control of PrE 12 to capture video from Hi8 tapes. Now I'm trying to learn enough about PrE 12 to actually do some good stuff. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your very valuable update.
Great news that you found the HP computer with firewire connection works for you. Great find. Great job.
You might want to check out the Premiere Elements 12 Help PDF and Adobe TV tutorials for starters and then decide what next for supplemental support.
