1. Re: Visible, thin, black lines around layer/layer mask
csuebele Feb 6, 2014 5:24 AM (in response to hbannister)Can you post a sample? Do you have layer styles applied that may be putting a glow, or drop shadow on the layers?

csuebele Feb 6, 2014 5:55 AM (in response to hbannister)Does it happen with all your images, or just this one? This is odd.

5. Re: Visible, thin, black lines around layer/layer mask
JJMack Feb 6, 2014 5:57 AM (in response to hbannister)Its your layer mask is letting the old background show around the edges of your subject. Look at some tutorials on masking. Extraction or removing backgrounds. Look into refine edges etc.

6. Re: Visible, thin, black lines around layer/layer mask
hbannister Feb 6, 2014 5:58 AM (in response to csuebele)It has happened once before but flattening and saving to jpeg got rid of the lines. I treated it as an anomoly as it hadn't happened before or since, until this past tuesday.
It is occuring on each layer with a layer mask.

7. Re: Visible, thin, black lines around layer/layer mask
hbannister Feb 6, 2014 6:04 AM (in response to JJMack)Thanks for your response. I have removed the background and still the thin black line is visbile. Refine edge does not appear to make a difference either.

8. Re: Visible, thin, black lines around layer/layer mask
JJMack Feb 6, 2014 6:31 AM (in response to hbannister)You need to read and look at masking tutorials. Look at sites like Russell Browns to topics like advance masking and extracting and practice. Sometimes its inpossible to create a very good mask in those cases you need to fudge it

9. Re: Visible, thin, black lines around layer/layer mask
hbannister Feb 6, 2014 6:36 AM (in response to JJMack)OK,
Under mask properties, refine mask edge, edge detection (with smart radius enabled) can be used to "help" the problem, but it does not remove it completely... it also comes at the expense of the edge, of the image that I want, itself. The image edge, in this case the girl flipping, gets worse, much worse.
Now for the funny part... the correction is as easy as erasing the edge using the ERASER tool on the background OR just painting the edge black on the layer mask itself... holy moly, I feel like an idiot!! I usually use the PEN tool for projects like this but have been trying to get "faster" by utilizing the QUICK SELECTION tool and refine edge. I still like the results with the pen tool better.
Thank you both. Without your help I would probably be trying to reinvent the wheel instead of looking at the simple solution.
Have a great day and thanks again!!!
