I have a Mac, version 10.8.5 and the installation always stops at 51% (error: general installation error). I have tried everything, yet nothing works. I went into Safari preferences, but I do not have the dialogue box to check off "allow all other plug-ins."

Please help!!!

Your troubles aren't coming from Flash Player.

You're missing a file that was made visible by the 10.8.5 update. Hundreds of thousands of Mac users all over the world deleted it, not knowing what it was. It causes this when it's missing.

Download this file: "Secrets" pereference pane

1.jpg

And this one: mach_kernel.zip

8.jpg

Install Secrets, and open your System Preferences.

2.jpg

Open the Secrets Preference Pane, and check "Show hidden files"

3.jpg

You'll need to press the "Quit this" button,

4.jpg

and restart Finder, by right clicking the Dock icon.

5.jpg

Then, place the mach_kernel.zip file in the Mac HD directory,

6.jpg

and unzip it. You should see a "faded" mach_kernel file appear.

7.jpg

Trash the zip file.

Reopen your System Preferences and uncheck "Show Hidden files".

Instead of quitting Finder and relaunching it, reboot your Mac.

Your Flash Player installer won't quit anymore.

After 4 hours of following adice on various pages, replacing the mach_kernel file was the one that finally got Flash Player 12 installed fully on my iMac 10.8.5
