Dear Community- I have recently bought a new computer with windows 8. We have had problems accessing websites that require Flash to play games like cbeebies. I have downloaded flash but when i check the version number it informs me that a) it is not enabled and b) flash is integrated in internet explorer. Still it doesn't work. I have switched off Actice X filtering and I have ensured the shockwave flash object is enabled. Still no joy..any suggestions?

Running IE11... sorry to hear that. To say it's garbage would be an insult to garbage everywhere. It's been a "rolling train wreck" since they released it October 18. The loonballs in Redmond, WA intentionally screwed up the "User-Agent Strings", which websites use to identify the browser and provide the proper content for it. They did this, thinking it would be cool to outsmart the web designer of the world.

The pages can't recognize the browser, so they don't recognize any of the plugins, like Flash Player. So far, Microsoft has made NO indication that they have any plan to fix it soon. In fact, I'm pretty sure they fully intend to leave things the way they are now.

Microsoft's recommendation is to use Compatibility View for affected pages, and "pretend" you're using an different browser. Trouble with that is it has seen limited success at best, and you have to individually enable it for EVERY page that has problems.

I'm not big on "pretending" so I recommend actually using another browser.

Firefox (from Mozilla)

Opera (from Opera)

Safari (from Apple)

Chrome (from Google)

ANY of those will work where IE11 won't, with the Flash Player Plug-in (For all other browsers), and Chrome doesn't even need that because it has its own Flash Player plugin built in.
