Intallation of Flash Player

I have been trying to install the Flash Player for months. I am running MS Windows 7. The download goes to 50% then says to close the Internet Exployer. I had closed it. I even closed the Adobe Download screen and then only had the Verizon Access Manger running which is my internet connector.  The download keeps saying close the IE then proceed.  I can not get it to install.   I called Customer Service today, they sent me to Technical Service, and I was  on hold for 45 minutes. I finally gave up wasting cell phone miuntes.  HELP.
