1. Re: Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?
Jon-M-Spear Feb 19, 2014 12:22 AM (in response to TheHausOfMarsian)Yes. It's called editing.
And you're in luck, because Adobe Premiere Pro happens to be an editing package.
- If you want to shorten clips, or use a particular part of them, put each one in the a timeline that matches the settings of the souce material
- Select the section that you want to use independently with IN and OUT points.
- Export using a codec that matches the source material.
- Either re-import into your Premiere project and place in custom bins or file externally according to your intended use.

TheHausOfMarsian Feb 19, 2014 12:32 AM (in response to Jon-M-Spear)Thanks Jon - That's kind of where I started, but the part of that I need help with on is the second to last step.
"Export using a codec that matches the source material. "
The codec they were captured in is .mov at DV quality, but then after picking .mov, there are so many other options to choose from as far as compression goes from sound quality and settings, to how many passes, etc. I just want the new clip to be of the same quality as the original clip. It looks so complicated and its not clear to me what options to pick to match the original.
Is there a setting or preference that helps you to match the compression settings of the original clip? Or is there a way to detect the settings of the original clip so I can repeat that in the shortened clip??

3. Re: Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?
Jon-M-Spear Feb 19, 2014 1:16 AM (in response to TheHausOfMarsian)Drag a source clip onto the the new item icon in the bottom right hand corner of the Project Panel. A new sequence should be created by PP that matches the source material You just need to check it in Sequence Settings to ensure it is what you think it should be..
You must know what format of DV you shot. Is it PAL or NTSC, 4:3 or 16:9?

JSS1138 Feb 19, 2014 8:13 AM (in response to TheHausOfMarsian)Don't worry about making new copies. That's just wasted time and hard drive space. Bring in the originals, and just use the segments you want for that project.
