1. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Jacob Bugge Feb 22, 2014 12:02 PM (in response to Canned Pug)Canned Pug,
The way I (mis)understand it, you may:
1) Create the rounded rectangle and create a normal gradient like the one from the bottom up;
2) Copy 1) and change to the gradient from top down;
3) Create a stroke/nofill circle with the same rounding as in the OP image and place it so that the lower part corresponds to the curved line in the OP image;
4) Select 2) and 3) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.

6. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 22, 2014 1:04 PM (in response to tman69)Both tman69 and Jacob Bugge have helped! but still not sure how to colorize a gradient. I can do it in InDesign but not here. Surely it's something simple!
thanks !

9. Re: making a white to clear gradient
tman69 Feb 22, 2014 1:31 PM (in response to Canned Pug)to 'change' the color of a gradient--drag a swatch from the color pallette to the little square as indicated in the screenshot that I posted.
to reply just do as you are doing--sign in--click reply (if you are already signed in--just refresh your browser window and new posts will appear)
to post a screenshot you first 'make a screenshot' (jpeg is ideal) then click on the little 'camera' icon that says insert image--browse to the screenshot--click 'open'--click on 'insert image' button.
to make a screenshot varies depending on what OS (PC or MAC) your using

10. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 22, 2014 1:35 PM (in response to tman69)yes of course that totally worked! I'd tried double-clicking on little house to get maybe a pop-up palette but never thought to drag one over. Thanks so much tman!

11. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 22, 2014 2:18 PM (in response to Jacob Bugge)Ok I tried to follow your steps. Aside from the color getting really washed out being on percentages, I'm doing something wrong. Do you understand what?
1-4. Two rectangles with gradients put on percentages and made a clipping mask:

5. gradient circle on percent:

6. Both selected, Object > Clipping Mask > Make:

I know it's too much to ask, I don't know what I'm doing...I'm not getting something, but if there's an easy fix, I'm listening!

13. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Jacob Bugge Feb 22, 2014 2:30 PM (in response to Canned Pug)Canned Pug,
To change a colour stop in a gradient, you may also click it and then insert the desired colour values in the Color palette.
The first post was a suggestion to get the clear and sharp curved line between two gradients without washing out. As I see the OP image, it contains vertical gradients, not colour transitions that follow the curve.

21. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 22, 2014 4:15 PM (in response to tman69)well there are many ways to skin a cat, and I'm still not quite getting the look I need but need to play around with all your suggestions so I can understand what's what. I will post the solution...but it might not be today. Someone experienced could get this in 2 minutes. Very frustrating...but I'm learning.
the clipping mask either isn't working the expected way,- I thought it would combine the shapes, but the bottom half gets deleted. I tried the Shape Modes palette but that's not working either.

23. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 22, 2014 4:41 PM (in response to tman69)well I was able to get the basic gradient, but then bringing down the top part (oval) that is either a fill or I tried a nofill/stroke, I can't isolate the button with any of those modes you just showed.
the button looks good here but I can't delete the background of the oval with any of the shape modes or pathfinder..I tried selecting with the black and the white arrow in case the type of selection mattered but it's not going anywhere

24. Re: making a white to clear gradient
tman69 Feb 22, 2014 5:20 PM (in response to Canned Pug)oval? what oval? why use oval? (to create round corners?) I have been building rectangles and then
creating round corners with clipping rectangle -using the rounded rectangle tool
can you post an example of something 'close' to what you want?
you probably just need to play with the gradient adjustments until you get the desired effect then duplicate/rotate/merge/clipping mask
note--you can adjust the shape of the clipping mask after all gradients are adjusted

25. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 22, 2014 5:57 PM (in response to tman69)no not for corners
to make an ellipse on the top half of the button
tomorrow I'll post an image. not on my computer now

27. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 23, 2014 12:26 PM (in response to tman69)yes more simple but I'm losing the bright turq at bottom of button with only one rectangle. I need to understand the combining effects of the layering of images, how they affect one another. Am using the transparency palette to no avail.
This is what I want, made from 2 separate gradient rectangles with an additional oval shape on top. (I took out the outside of the oval with Photoshop). I am unable to make a clipping mask that leaves all areas intact:
This is how far I get, (below) and making a clipping mask either cuts out an area of the button I want, deletes one of the rectangles, which changes the gradation or "deletes" the whole image except for the bounding box(es), (Like in Post #11 above, image 5). I need to get rid of the areas with the red "X's". (I still think I'm thinking in terms of rasterizing software and can't get my head around Illustrator. I can do all I want in InDesign, but need to use Ai, so I don't understand what I don't understand!:
In this last I tried simplifying the orig. elements, and made it from 1 rectangle that had a 3-color gradient (so I can keep the intensity of colors), but when I lay the top oval on, I don't get the look I want, regardless of transparency settings, arrangement of objects or if the oval is with/without a gradient...and still can't make a clipping mask anyway:
Thinking outloud here!

28. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Jacob Bugge Feb 23, 2014 12:42 PM (in response to Canned Pug)Canned Pug,
I still wonder: is there a reason for using transparency?
In the first post, I just imagined the top part (the one shaped to curve at the bottom with the Clipping Path) to cover the upper portion of the bottom part, with 100% (normal) opacity.

29. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 23, 2014 1:00 PM (in response to Jacob Bugge)well, I'm thinking that in fooling around, I got a look I wanted and it happened to have a transparency and now I'm stuck with it.

30. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Jacob Bugge Feb 23, 2014 1:49 PM (in response to Canned Pug)Canned Pug,
Maybe you should try to work with an Opacity Mask instead of a Clipping Mask.
The Opacity Mask shows or hides according to its colour between white and black, depending on whether it is inverted and whether it clips or not.
You find it in the Transparency flyout, and use it as follows:
1) Select both the underlying object(s), in this case the rounded rectangle and whatever, and the object that masks, in this case the ellipse on top;
2) In the Transparency flyout click Make Opacity mask, with Clip ticked or unticke and with Invert Mask ticked or unticked.
You can try the different combinations and different colourings of the ellipse including solid and gradients to see how it works.

32. Re: making a white to clear gradient
tman69 Feb 23, 2014 2:14 PM (in response to Canned Pug)re: post 11-5--I didn't realize that you had already created a clipping mask--but upon closer look I noted that you made a clipping mask and then added the oval and then tried to make a clipping mask in/on an existing clipping mask--trying that is what got you the object with the missing element--I can see in your screenshot that the bottom rectangle is 'not' selected.
you need to have all objects selected before you choose 'clipping mask>make' and none of the object can already be a clipping mask
as far as the transparency goes--your image above has transparency on top of the 'm'--however--once you've created the object as a 'masked' object--you can directly select anything that's inside the mask--select with direct selection arrow--then change to solid arrow--then you can tweak gradients, transparency, color etc.

33. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Jacob Bugge Feb 23, 2014 2:20 PM (in response to Canned Pug)CP,
It should be mentioned, for the Opacity mask, just use an object (white/grey/black) with full opacity.

34. Re: making a white to clear gradient
Canned Pug Feb 23, 2014 4:40 PM (in response to tman69)yes it made it a clipping mask when I made a rounded-corner rectangle.
