1. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
bob frost Feb 22, 2014 11:57 AM (in response to Nevada Shooter)If you have stacked images and the stack is collapsed, only the top image will show in the count. So go to Photos/stacking/expand all stacks and they should all show up. Does this solve the problem for you?

2. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 1:27 PM (in response to bob frost)Thank you for the suggestion Bob. Unfortunately, it did not work. I tried collapsing and expending all stacks and it did behave the way you said but I am still 10 photos short. It used to be 11 so maybe one of the missing was in a stack, but it still is only showing 3873 of 3883.

Bob Somrak Feb 22, 2014 2:25 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)Have you optimized the catalog on exit?
Have you done "Library/Synchronize Folders"

4. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 2:46 PM (in response to Bob Somrak)Yes, Bob Somrak, I have optimized the catalog and told it to check the integrity of the catalog and synchronized the folders, all to no avail. Thank you for taking the time to make a suggestion though.

6. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 3:05 PM (in response to MikeMcW)I have never learned how to make snapshots, so there should not be any. How would I check just in case? I have checked to see if it could be virtual copies, and that does not seem to be the case.

7. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Bob Somrak Feb 22, 2014 3:18 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)I seen a previous post where someone was getting weird numbers in the Synchronize Folder command and they used "Export as Catalog" and it cleaned up the wonky catalog. Considering you only have a few thousand files this should go fast if you switch everything off in the export. You could then load the new catalog and see if it cleared things up.

9. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
MikeMcW Feb 22, 2014 3:29 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)Just tested snapshots and they do not show as images.
My catalogue was showing a mismatch, but that was due to stacks and after expanding them the count was correct.

10. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 3:38 PM (in response to Bob Somrak)Bob Somrak, I may have to try some think like you suggest. I had considered deleting the catalog and starting fresh. This catalog seems messed up. This all started when I created a new master catalog and tried importing this one into it. I would import 3873 pictures and then give me an error message saying it could not import this catalog because of an "Unknown Error". So, I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with it. It has a lot of pictures that have the exclamation sigh in a rectangle in the top right corner. When I mouse over that it says it is missing the sidecar file. When I right left click to get the list of missng files, none are listed. When I go to the folders in Windows Explorer, all the XMP files are there. Another problem is when I synconize the main folder (all the pictures are in subfolders) it tells me I am missing 19 pictures. When I tell it to find the missing pictures it tells me they are all available. So, I just now told it to remove them and I will re-import them.

12. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 6:17 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)Well, Export as Catalog is not an option. I don't have enough disk space.

14. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 7:24 PM (in response to Bob Somrak)Bob Somrak, I forgot to turn off the Export Negatives check box.
So I did the Export as Catalog and it came up with 3992 in All Photographs and 3991 in the file totals. So it got rid of the 10 extra pictures. I then had it syncronize the top level folder and it found and imported 10 photos. So I now have 4002 pictures and it is displaying 4002 pictures. 4002 is the total LR said I was supposed to have in the old catalog before I did the export, but it would only display 3992. Unfortunatly, I still have the problem that it thinks the sidecar files are missing. It does not seem to make any difference to anything, so maybe I should just not worry about that.
Thank you very much for your help!
I have two calalogs with family photos in them, I will now see if it will let me merge them.

15. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Bob Somrak Feb 22, 2014 7:29 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)Just select all the RAWS and resave the sidecars in the new catalog. It will just overwrite the old sidecars. That will take care of that problem.

16. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 7:39 PM (in response to Bob Somrak)If by resave the sidecars you mean select the RAW files and do a Control-S or Save Metadata to File, I have tried that and it had no effect. Did you have something else in mind?

17. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Bob Somrak Feb 22, 2014 7:46 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)I thought that should have worked. BTW, how does it tell you the sidecars are missing. Maybe someone else will have to solve the sidecar problem as I have no more ideas. One more idea. What if you delete the sidecar files in the OS and then save the sidecars again.

18. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 7:58 PM (in response to Bob Somrak)There is an exclamation sign in a rectangle in the top right corner (See the screen capture above). When I mouse over that it says it is missing the sidecar file. When I right left click to get the list of missing files, none are listed. When I go to the folders in Windows Explorer, all the XMP files are there. I have tried deleting the XMP file, LR creates a new one, but the exclamation point remains. The only way I have been able to get rid of it is to right click on each one individually and tell it to continue tracking it. I don't know what the consequences are for telling it to Forget the sidecar file or if there is a way to unforget it if I don't like the results.

19. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Bob Somrak Feb 22, 2014 8:48 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)If you make a change to a photo and then CTRL-S does the the link get fixed?

20. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 8:58 PM (in response to Bob Somrak)No, but that did fix a problem with a file that had the symbol for the metadata data needing to be updated (some horizantal lines and an arrow) and it refused to go away no matter how many times it told it to write the data to the file, until I made a change to the metadata, then it worked. With the sidecar problem, I tried both development changes and metadata changes. No effect.

21. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Bob Somrak Feb 22, 2014 9:41 PM (in response to Nevada Shooter)I was doing a little Googling on missing sidecar files and it appears this has been a problem since Lightroom Version 1 !!!! http://forums.adobe.com/message/1463681
It kind of amazes me how many BUGS/POOR DESIGNS there are that NEVER get fixed. The version 5 upgrade was pretty lean on features although I must admit I like ALL the ones they have included. You think they would have spent some time fixing some of these longstanding problems and said it was a feature. I remember on one of the Lr5 announcements they were proud of fixing 400+ bugs if I remember right. I would sure like to know what they actually fixed.

22. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 22, 2014 11:47 PM (in response to Bob Somrak)I agree with you Bob. On another thread today I asked about a problem I was having with Search. I found another thread from 2011 where Adobe admitted that it was a bug and they were working on it. Search is not a trivial feature of a database engine which Lightroom is supposed to be besides a RAW processor. This is why I refuse to join the Cloud. The Cloud gives Adobe an income stream that is garanteed whether they fix any bugs or provide any new features or not. I hope Lightroom stays a stand alone program.
I have fixed all the photos with sidecar problems the hard way.

23. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
bob frost Feb 23, 2014 3:28 AM (in response to Nevada Shooter)OK, then my next suggestion was going to be that suggested above by Bob S - Export as a new catalog. I've had to do that in the past with the same problem, and it has usually cured it. It is also very good for curing other problems that sometimes occur after upgrading from an earlier LR version. I've looked in the catalog database and found corrupt duplicate entries for some images, and these corrupt entries disappeared after an Export to a new catalog.

24. Re: Why does the number of images displayed in LR 5.3 not equal the total number of images.
Nevada Shooter Feb 24, 2014 8:06 AM (in response to bob frost)Bob Frost, I did the Export as Catalog followed by another Synchronize Folder and that took care of the problem. It appears as though Lightroom stores the image count in two different places and never reconciles them. Once one of them is off, it stays off.
