thanks for the input. That was a good tip.
I did the search you suggested and unfortunately found that none of the Snippets I wrote are in that folder. The list I got for search results also did not include any of the names of the ones I created (although I only named them with the Snippets interface and not with the camel-case convention I see the factory one have).
Coud you suggest anything else?

jl2000 Mar 2, 2014 6:06 AM (in response to Nancy O.)Nancy O - thanks for the input. I checked that Pref panel and found it already disabled. That's an oblique connection. How did you ever put disappearing files together with Speech Recognition and Dictation preferences??

Nancy O. Mar 2, 2014 1:09 PM (in response to jl2000)I didn't pull this out of thin air. Several Mavericks users have had problems with lines of code disappearing from files and other issues. Problems went away when Speech & Dictation were disabled.
Try creating a new admin level user account in your OS.
