1. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Ann Bens Feb 26, 2014 1:58 PM (in response to -Samps-)I would burn to a good brand of dvd disk like verbatim and check your dvd player.

2. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Feb 26, 2014 2:29 PM (in response to Ann Bens)Hi Ann, if there was a problem with the quality of the disk, how come the disk plays fine in windows media player, real player, and power DVD (basicly all the players on my computer)?
And if there's a problem with my DVD player, how come the sound plays properly for the first 40 seconds and closing credits...always at the same spot? Also, this DVD player has never had issues with other DVDs, including one I burned before for another project (TDK brand in both cases).

3. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Ann Bens Feb 26, 2014 2:55 PM (in response to -Samps-)If you want to find out what the trouble is you have to either change the disk brand or dvd player.
I would not go for TDK.

4. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
John T Smith Feb 27, 2014 10:14 AM (in response to -Samps-)Many people here use the free (donate to the author if you like his program) Imgburn which will read the actual brand from the blank disc
I don't know about TDK, but several companies buy "anywhere" so a spindle of 50 blanks may have several different actual brands
Read http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1322583 for notes on installing Imgburn WITHOUT any toolbar add-ons

6. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Feb 27, 2014 10:03 AM (in response to JSS1138)Hi Jim & Ann, I tested the DVD on another DVD player and it's fine.
Just to be thorough, I did a reburn of the DVD and this one also has problems on the original DVD player...so we can rule out that some freak glitch happened during the burn.Today at work I'll burn to another brand (I found a Fuji one) and will post the results.
I should add that the orginal DVD player plays all other DVDs fine, including other projects I've burned, so it isn't defective.

7. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Feb 28, 2014 9:34 AM (in response to -Samps-)I tested the burn to the other brand (Fuji) on the original DVD player at home and it gave me the same problem in the exact same spot in the timeline, as with the TDK brand.
I also tested the original TDK disk on a 3rd DVD player and it's fine. So the disk (regardless of brand) plays properly on 2 out of 3 DVD players.
Personally, I suspect there's something I inadvertently touched or a setting in either premiere in encore, or something in the encoding that only affects older DVD players. Does anyone have any other ideas?
To summarize, I feel the disc brand can't be blamed, because (1) both Fuji & TDK discs have same problem in exact same location (2) both discs play perfectly on all computer players and 2 out of 3 DVD players...yet I also don't think my DVD player can be blamed, because it plays every other DVD out there perfectly.
Besides, just "changing the DVD player" doesn't really solve my problem, if my player has problems with the disc, it's inevitable that a certain percentage of customers will have the same problem.
Anyone?

8. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
John T Smith Feb 28, 2014 9:40 AM (in response to -Samps-)Go back to my reply #4 and the link to install Imgburn... then have Encore write your output to an ISO file on your hard drive
Use Imgburn to write the ISO to disc... and tell Imgburn to use the slowest possible burn setting
The speed of burning is not selectable in Encore
This may not fix your problem... but it is worth a try

JSS1138 Mar 1, 2014 8:32 AM (in response to -Samps-)I also don't think my DVD player can be blamed
I do.
if my player has problems with the disc, it's inevitable that a certain percentage of customers will have the same problem.
Not necessarilly.

10. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Richard M Knight Mar 1, 2014 8:53 AM (in response to JSS1138)If the audio on disc is Dolby Digital it could be a case of a faulty Dianorm flag. The faulty player could be miss reading the level and changing gain, where as the other players may be ignoring Dianorm setting and playing back at unity.

11. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Mar 3, 2014 5:16 PM (in response to JSS1138)Thanks Jim, to clarify, are you saying you think my player is defective? If so, how would you explain the fact that it plays all other DVDs fine, including past projects I've burned? If not defective, wouldn't customers with the same player have the same problems (at best), and at worst, customers with other similarly-built players have problems?

12. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Mar 3, 2014 5:30 PM (in response to Richard M Knight)Hi Richard, I'd like to explore what you're saying further, I think we're getting warmer. I have no experience in controlling dianorms...what I can tell you is that there are 2 audio tracks, one for dialogue (track 1), the other for opening / closing credits music (track 2).
Track 1 dialogue is quiet by comparison, so I cranked the track using the yellow line (with "control nodes" sorry about my newbeeness) in premiere to max (premiere says it's 6db when hovering over yellow line). I also raised the track volume with the audio mixer knobs to 4.1 (sorry, it doesn't tell me what unit this is, db?).
The result is that during playback in premiere, it sounds more or less balanced with the loud track (music). The master "volume reading" only "clips" (i.e turns red) in a few spots throughout the video in premiere. But this doesn't happen right away, certainly not as soon as the "dropping problem" that occurs 10 seconds into the dialogue.
And again, when the closing music comes on, it blasts in the problematic DVD player, but the whole video sounds fine when played on other DVD players or computer.
Does it still sound like the dianorm issue you mention? If so, how can I fix it?

13. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
JSS1138 Mar 3, 2014 5:45 PM (in response to -Samps-)how would you explain the fact that it plays all other DVDs fine
I think it's irrelevant. It's the only machine that plays this one incorrectly. That's a strong indicator that this machine (or it's settings) are the issue.

15. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Mar 4, 2014 11:31 AM (in response to Richard M Knight)Hi Richard, although my export settings in AME were PCM (since I think if I selected dolby, it wanted me to pay for a licence), my project settings in Encore were dolby. Would that mean that dianorms might still be the problem, and if so, how do I fix?
Also, in my AME export settings, I selected "DVD" in the multiplexing tab. The only other possible red flag is that track 1 seems to only have waveforms in the Left channel (probably a mono recording originally) - I can live with that, just offering it up in case it might explain the problem.
Thanks for the info re: audio dynamic fx on master track, good to know, even though it sounds like you're saying that won't solve my problem.

16. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Richard M Knight Mar 5, 2014 1:50 AM (in response to -Samps-)There may be another answer that has cropped up a couple of times:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/5790118#5790118
On thinking about it, if your stereo music is OK but your dialogue is faulty you may have a phase error on just those tracks. If you could post the audio track somewhere I could check the phase for you.

17. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Mar 5, 2014 10:34 AM (in response to Richard M Knight)Thanks Richard, I read the post in your link. Unfortunately I don't have Audition, nor was I able to find a way to sum stereo to mono in the master track from premiere.
To attempt to replicate a mono output, I plugged in an earphone with only the left earbud, marked "L" (the right earbud was snapped off years ago). I listened to the project from premiere, and also from the DVD from my computer, and it sounded fine. I don't know if my earphone method is accurate, since the dialogue track has waveforms on the left channel. I wonder had I plugged in the "R" earbud, would I hear silence due to the dialogue track's empty right channel?
To clarify, the sound has never had any "audible" problems in premiere, encore, or DVD when played on a computer. And the drastic sound drop occurs after 10 seconds of the dialogue on my home DVD player, so at least a portion of that track (long clip) plays fine.
If you think dianorms or phase errors are still possibilities, please advise on a fix. And if you want me to upload anything (sound, video, etc), let me know what format you want. Much appreciated!

18. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Richard M Knight Mar 5, 2014 11:57 AM (in response to -Samps-)Listening to just one side of the stereo will not show the problem, it is when both channels get combined to mono in the player that the faults show up. Put a clip of the faulty part of your video on this forum or upload the same to You tube and i will take a look. I'm in the studio here in the UK tomorrow so I might not look at it till Friday.

19. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Mar 7, 2014 12:21 PM (in response to Richard M Knight)I uploaded the first 50 seconds or so of the video at the link below. I exported an mpeg from premiere using the same settings I showed above, so this is just a shorter version of what I imported to encore to make the DVD.
Thanks for taking a look RIchard, let me know if you have any problems accessing the video...if so, then I'll try youtube (which I'm avoiding for now because the person in the video wants to remain as private as possible).

You can set a youtube private and even a password. Share that and the private link; then take it down after a day or so.

24. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Richard M Knight Mar 8, 2014 12:51 PM (in response to -Samps-)Just had a look at the clip, the opening music is in stereo and the dialogue is left only. It is possible that your dvd player is only outputting the right channel.
-
25. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Mar 8, 2014 3:36 PM (in response to Richard M Knight)Thanks. If the DVD player was only outputting the right channel, then why would the first 10 seconds of the dialogue sound perfect?
Also, remember that the problem isn't that the dialogue "disappears", rather gets suddenly, drastically reduced (by a factor of around 75%). If my DVD player was only outputting the right channel, wouldn't we be hearing complete silence during dialogue?
Another piece of info that may or may not shed light: I have the dialogue track panned hard left...this was done in an earlier attempt to boost the track's volume, since the right channel is completely empty anyway (i.e. no visible audio waves in premiere, no matter how much I zoom in).
Are phase problems and dianorms ruled out, or still in contention?
-
26. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Stan Jones Mar 8, 2014 4:06 PM (in response to -Samps-)I was hearing "regular" dialog volume in the left and much softer, but not absent, in the right. I can not guarantee that is not an artifact on this end.
I think you need to have fixed the audio issue in Premiere. It sounds like you have a stereo audio track from a source that had a mike in only one channel. Instead of panning, "fill right" (or left, I always have to check myself on that) so that you get the dialogue in both sides.
I do not believe you have ruled out a phase issue. But I suspect that when you fix the track problem, your audio will be okay.

27. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
Richard M Knight Mar 9, 2014 1:18 AM (in response to Stan Jones)I agree with Stan, you need to fix the master export in Premiere first.

28. Re: Sound drops suddenly on DVD player, but fine in premiere, encore, and WM Player
-Samps- Mar 10, 2014 9:15 PM (in response to Stan Jones)Problem solved...I did as you both said; first I moved the dialogue pan from hard left to center, then "fill left" (a pretty unintuitive term by the way, you'd think "fill right" would mean fill the empty right channel). I also followed Richard's earlier advice in applying the dynamics effect, though it seems that this wasn't necessarily the root of the problem, but still a good thing for me to learn to do.
Thanks to you both, I feel like I've learned 3 topics in one!
