Links not working in Reader for some

    vward26 Community Member

      Hi,

I'm making PDF documents from InDesign and then opening up the PDF in Acrobat Pro on my Mac and adding in links. Once I save and open the PDFs again, I'm able to click on the links in both Pro and Reader and they work on my computer, but for others on a PC using the Reader 11, the links don't work. Anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

      Thanks!

What do you mean by they don't work? What exactly happens?

By the way, you can skip the whole adding links in Acrobat step. You can do that in ID and with the proper export functions, the links will be preserved.

By nothing happening, I mean, that the cursor doesn't change into the 'hand' and the links aren't live and don't take you to the webpage.

How do I export it with the proper functions so I can skip the steps in Acrobat? Is there anything I need to do to the text before I export it or does it automatically recognize any links in the document?

            Thanks for your help!

Hmm. Sounds like something went wrong with the links. Are they spelled out (using http://www....etc) or are they hyperlinks? If they are spelled out, you could have your version of Reader set to recognize links and they may not (Edit>Preferences>General>Basic tools - Create links from URLs).

To create links in ID, highlight the text, go to your hyperlinks pallet and in the drop-down select "New link" and fill in the appropriate information. Then when you export it to PDF from ID, in the "General" settings section under "include" select "Hyperlinks".

There are other options you may want to be aware of but that's better asked about in the ID forum.

Ok. Thank you. They are all usually spelled out and not hyperlinks. I will have them check their settings and also try just doing this in ID from now on too. I'm obviously up for anything that involves less steps!

More than likely, that preference setting is the culprit but yes, once you get used to creating the links in ID, you'll probably like it better. Good luck.
