2. Re: Raid card suggestions for internal config
Bill Gehrke Mar 16, 2014 8:25 PM (in response to LJH)After you finish reading Harm's excellant article that cc_merchant suggested, I do have a comment about the onboard RAID on the motherboard. It is not that the onboard RAID on the motherboard is unreliable, it is that they do not offer the more advanced, more efficient (fewer drives) forms of RAID. And in some cases only offer 3 Gb/second ports which can limit performance. The gold standard of RAID cards is the Areca and a card like the ARC-1882IX.

LJH Mar 17, 2014 3:07 AM (in response to cc_merchant)I don't know how I missed this article. As usual for Harm, a very comprehensive account. Had a bit of a chuckle with his opening shot for Raid 10 users :
“The Raid level for paranoids in a hurry”
Oh well, I'll go and have my eighth cup of coffee for today
Cheers.

LJH Mar 17, 2014 3:06 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)Cheers Bill. The problem with dedicated Raid cards is they are so darned expensive and I really don't know why. Limited manufacturing runs I guess. I've no experience with the Intel/Marvell controllers on the board, might have to experiment.
