1. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 18, 2014 7:41 AM (in response to robirdman1)this problem has stopped me from making any further progress. I removed the track that was replacing others from the project, and then another clip substituted for other clips. then I tried a couple more new projects with different subjects and from different folders and the same thing is happening.
The last time I tried a different approach. Instead of dragging all the clips at once to the new sequence folder or timeline, after importing them all I added one, then trimmed, the next and so on, and the 4th one is playing the same sequence as the 3rd.
Actually before finishing this post I came back to check for more details as the 3rd is much shorter than the 4th and I wanted to see relay what happened with the extra time.
but when I returned, now the 3rd sequence is playing part of the 4th, just the reverse.

3. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 18, 2014 12:39 PM (in response to JSS1138)D4 yes. I don't know the format. On phone with Adobe tech for over 2 hours and nothing worked. Putting a couple of substituted images in another folder and importing and they still did it.

SAFEHARBOR11 Mar 18, 2014 1:56 PM (in response to robirdman1)How do you handle the files and importing into Premiere? Very important to NOT modify the original folder structure as it came from SD card, copy entire contents to hard drive, then in Premiere use the "Media Browser" for import. There is metadata and such in that folder structure, and I'm wondering if perhaps you were picking and choosing the video clips and moving them to the different bird folders? Premiere tends to get confused sometimes when it's done that way.

5. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
JSS1138 Mar 18, 2014 2:29 PM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Jeff and I had the same thought. Unless you shoot only one species of bird at a time, and only male or female of that species, then you're likely moving things around on the hard drive to organize them, and that may be the cause here.
With tapless media, the rule of thumb is to copy the the entire card to the hard drive, and leave it untouched. We lose some basic media management functions that we've always had with DV because of the folder structures on the cards. When you don't keep that intact, things can go wrong. It's possible this is one of those things.

6. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 18, 2014 7:32 PM (in response to JSS1138)I have accumlated more than a thosand video clips and made some movies before, but am only now starting to do it more intensely.
My procedure has always been thus: download the card to a new day folder. Rough edit and delete obvious junk. Re-edit more carefully once or twice and maybe rate the videos as well as the stills from the card. After this I add data, such as description, locality, date etc. Then I renumber all contents according to my numbering system. Then I move all subjects to species folders that are arranged in a phylogenetic tree.
This problem only popped up a few days ago. Just before that I made some other video with about the same number of clips without the problem and posted some to youtube, EG:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bncsJYgwNBc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDw_6SCYneI
An older one of different clips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jneFL5xb0Ow
So the problem doesn't seem related to thsi way I have always done things and only started a couple of days ago, coincidentally though after I added McAfee to my computer.

7. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
SAFEHARBOR11 Mar 19, 2014 7:32 AM (in response to robirdman1)Sorry, but McAfee, Norton and the like are performance hogs and can really bog down the edit system, among other issues. I would never use them. If you need protection, the free Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 is lightweight and it works really well.
Thanks

8. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 9:44 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)I was having an unbelievable problem with popups on the web. Every time I would be about to click somewhere, a popup would appear there and take me out of the site I was on. As fast as I closed them, they and others would reappear. I first tried the Microsoft Security Essentials, but it didn't do anything, so I tried McAfee, which I never had wanted to use for the reasons you stated. That did take care of the popup problem. But shortly after installing it, this PP thing happened. I don't know if it is coincidence.
Now I uninstalled PP and reinstalled it. To my surprise, after doing so, it still listed recent projects and clicking on one that had the problem still does.
I thought I would have no recent projects with a reinstall and it would be totally fresh.

SAFEHARBOR11 Mar 21, 2014 9:47 AM (in response to robirdman1)Reinstalling Premiere never touches your projects. That would be horrible if a reinstall would wipe out your existing work!

robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 10:17 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Right, but I wasn't expecting it to know what were recent projects, if it hadn't existed when they were created.

SAFEHARBOR11 Mar 21, 2014 10:26 AM (in response to robirdman1)Ah, I see! Well unless you run the "Adobe Cleaner" utility in between uninstall/resinstall, there are usually some leftovers in the system. Whatever file keeps track of Recent Projects must have remained. Perhaps that is by design though?

robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 10:51 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)On the other hand, when I did the "Install updates" , after a long time of waiting and watching the bar graph, at the end it said it couldn't install any.

13. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 1:01 PM (in response to robirdman1)Then I call Adobe about not being able update and the installation help guy takes my email info and says to hold on and a half hour later I am disconnected. then I call and tell sales customer service what happened and she says they only have 4 minute wait and she will put a note to talk to a supervisor about that. So then no one even picks up in a half hour and I call again and tell the story and she says she is transfering me to imaging with a wait time of 15 minutes. I'll see what happens next.
I had this progam for some time and I have accumulated over a thousand clips, but am mainly a still photographer and worked with Photoshop. Now I was going to get more involved with this, but then after less than a dozen videos I am stopped in my tracks.
the non-updated version doesn't even list AVI files from my D300s as a choice to import.

14. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 1:20 PM (in response to robirdman1)40 minutes and no pickup. They have my "number". I had told them when I was having the substitute problem that I didn't want to subscribe to Creative Cloud, so they have no interest in me, despite having bought PP, Photoshop, Adobe audition.

shooternz Mar 21, 2014 1:37 PM (in response to robirdman1)I have not read the entire thread...but may I ask..what are these numbers and where did they come from?
Further investigation shows that the clip that is playing is 9004753. It, also took the place of 9004739 and 98004790, which are also male birds.
They dont appear to be source file CLIP number protocol for AVCHD (mts)

16. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 2:03 PM (in response to shooternz)Those are just the numbers I assign when I rename the camera's original numbers. 9004753 means that it is the 4753rd shot taken with the D4 came whose code starts with 9. The 98004790 is a mistype as the 8 shouldn't be there.
I called Adobe upgrades on my cell phone and said "Do you know what this sound is?" and held it to my landline phone which is playing Adobe's background music for an hour and 20 minutes now. He said ,well you have to be patient as there are a lot of people ahead of you. I said how I was connected quickly the first time but the guy went away for a half hour and then hung up. The second time the person said she saw there was a 4 minute wait and the 3rd time a 15 minute wait. Then he said I could just pay $299 for the upgrade instead of update or subscribe to Creative Cloud, otherwise I could just be more patient. I said I'll just leave the phone on till it goes dead but I doubt that anyone is going to answer and I would let the Attorney General know how they treat you when you don't want the subscription. It is ridiculous.

19. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 5:16 PM (in response to shooternz)I'm sorry but this sound like a very disordered way, having files all over different folders on the computer with names that mean nothing so one wouldn't know where a subject was , if you wanted an eagle from one day in a sequence with one from one on a different day a year later you would have to open folders everywhere to find anything.
A fact of Adobe Photoshop, where I first download my camera images to, is that sometime, you can add metadata such as time and place, etc, and other times you never can. Also a date is not added automatically, and it doesn't even list the camera model.
Now regarding trying to find out why the update failed, believe it or not, a person came on the phone after over 4 hours of music playing and then said he talked to the supervisor and cannot offer any phone support, not even telling me why the update failed. but I can go on the forum here and he assured me an Adobe tech will immediately solve this problem. I'll post it under a different title just in case he's not making it up as I suspect.

shooternz Mar 21, 2014 5:55 PM (in response to robirdman1)My concern is about your renaming of clips and it seems you do it after doing some preliminary edit work with them.
I am not sure exactly what or where or when you are renaming them?

Welcome to the wonderful world of tapeless media. We took two steps forward eliminating real time capture, but definitely a step backwards when it comes to media management. You should let your preferred camera maker know that for H.265, you want everything in a single MXF file - video, audio, timecode and metadata - with no folders and recording to exFAT formatted cards so recording doesn't need to span across files when they hit 4GB.
Until that seemingly obvious goal is achieved, you take your chances when you mess with the folder structure of your media.

22. Re: Strange problem with videos substituted
robirdman1 Mar 21, 2014 8:22 PM (in response to JSS1138)By edit and re-edit, I meant going through and deleting what I don't want and changing the appearance of RAW image files.
I only initially review the videos to rate them and apply data info, (when possible) in Photoshop or Window Media player, where there is no editing or trimming possible.
When I get around to looking in PP, they already have their permanent number names and species folders. 90% have never been opened in PP, and with all these recent ones, it was their first time.
Of the videos I put on youtube, I see that one is over 1G and another is over 3G and neither of these had the problem though.
