Flash Player will not install on MacBook pro

Hi,

I need help. Granted, I am new to mac, but tyring to install flash player has been a nightmare. I cannot figure it out. I have removed the older version that was on my computer, emptied the trash, restarted, and then tried to reinstall over and over and each time it dowloads to 50% and then stops saying I need to close Safari. It does not seem to matter if I close safari before the download even begins or once it prompts me.

Can anyone help?

My MacBook is a 2009 but I am operating with OXs 10.9
