1. Re: Can I apply a mask to a layer style? - With answer!
c.pfaffenbichler Apr 6, 2014 7:24 AM (in response to John_Picton)Applying the Layer mask and then trying to convert the layer to a smart object.
This gives a completely wild effect.
How so?
However I would still be interested to hear of any other solutions, or if indeed the way I did it was the best way.
I consider a Layer Mask on a Group the most reasonable approach in such a case.

John_Picton Apr 6, 2014 7:34 AM (in response to c.pfaffenbichler)This is before - Notice that the "glow" is red.
This is After. All I did was "apply layer mask" and then go to layers/smart objects/convert to smart object. Notice that the "glow" is now a completely different colour. In hindsight saying that the effect was completely wild was probably a bit OTT, but it certainly wasn't what I wanted.

3. Re: Can I apply a mask to a layer style? - With answer!
c.pfaffenbichler Apr 6, 2014 7:38 AM (in response to John_Picton)I suspect this may be owed to the fact that an instance of a Smart Object is a Layer, it can not combine multiple Blend Modes but only have one.

5. Re: Can I apply a mask to a layer style? - With answer!
Trevor.Dennis Apr 6, 2014 2:41 PM (in response to John_Picton)The problem with layer masks is that layer styles follow the masked shape of the layer. So what I do is right click the effect and choose Create layer which places any layer styles on separate layers. The you can add layer masks to the effect independently from the source layer.

John_Picton Apr 8, 2014 12:52 AM (in response to Trevor.Dennis)Hi Trevor
sorry for the delay in my reply.
That works (as you know) and is more flexible than my method so thanks.
Cheers
John
