Barbara,
I have not tried it, but when you open the ACR dialog, there is a menu icon, just right of the eye icon, which lets you choose to store the edits either in xmp files or in a cameraraw database.
That should be a solution for people who don't use the organizer (those who do don't bother about xmp sidecar files cluttering their folder trees).

Little_Pale_Face May 6, 2014 1:12 AM (in response to MichelBParis)Michel,
The bit about the Camera Raw database raises a few questions for me.
1) Where is the database?
2) Should it be backed up?
3) What tidies it up - otherwise it will get enormous and contain information about deleted images.
Reading the following thread, I get the impression that the camera raw database is a cache and entries have a limited life in there. As you add new ones, the older ones could be lost.
how do I backup Camera Raw Database?
I might be reading it wrong.

As I have said before, I have not tried the option of the Camera Raw database.
If I read your link correctly, the only relevant answer is the last one by Thomas Knoll (an expert).
'The camera raw database is indexed by file contents, not file paths, so just moving the database over works fine when moving between machines. '
So, to answer the first question, I'll have to find a way to choose the database option on another computer without disturbing my present xmp choice
I am sure it should be backed up.
I think it's working the same as the thumbnail cache, which is really a sqlite database. I am quite sure it must be updated and it is probably 'optimized' or 'refreshed' like the thumbnail cache. It can be moved without losing the links to the real files, based not on paths, but on internal content - maybe file size, date taken and ??? -
Those are only suppositions until I can do a real test...

5. Re: XMP Required?
MichelBParis May 6, 2014 11:47 AM (in response to MichelBParis)Where is the database ?
In my Windows 7 it's in:
C:/Users/Michel/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/CameraRaw
It's simply called 'Database' (no known database format like sqlite...)
It should not be confused with the ACR cache used by Bridge, which is really a cache to speedup viewing recently viewed files. Just a few tests show that if an xmp sidecar file already exists, it's used instead of the database ??? Too soon to have an opinion.
I have posted this in the ACR forum:
Camera raw in Elements 12 - Using the database instead of xmp sidecar files
