1. Re: how to get rid of white areas on black and white image
Steve Fairbairn May 19, 2014 4:59 PM (in response to Canned Pug)Sounds as if your image is a compound path, so to be able to colour it differently you need to release the compound. Either that or put other areas of colour behind the “holes”.

Canned Pug May 19, 2014 5:09 PM (in response to Steve Fairbairn)You're right!...I released it and was able to color the black area with a color...but is there any way to actually delete the white areas as well?
Actually in trying to do the above, I reverted to the orig image and did something else, now releasing and/or expanding doesn't do it...not sure what I just did...
ugh!
thanks!

Canned Pug May 19, 2014 5:10 PM (in response to Steve Fairbairn)ok, what I did was use the direct selection tool and selected the black areas, then I was able to color them...still...I'd like to be able to delete all the white areas without having to go in and pick them all out...is there a way??

4. Re: how to get rid of white areas on black and white image
Steve Fairbairn May 19, 2014 5:15 PM (in response to Canned Pug)If I understand you right your image turned black when you released the compound. This is normal. Just colour the outermost path pink-or-something and then you will see the “what-used-to-be-holes” colored black.
I thought you wanted to colour the “holes”, so why do you want to delete them? You can just delete them but then you won’t have anything left to colour.
Can you attach a screen shot so that we can see the problem?

5. Re: how to get rid of white areas on black and white image
Canned Pug May 19, 2014 5:22 PM (in response to Steve Fairbairn)Yes, so sorry,
here is an image of a truck, where I've selected some of it and colored it blue...(I've placed a magenta sq behind to show that the white areas aren't clear) .
I want to be able to have only the black (or blue areas) by themselves so I can combine them into just one shape. I will pick out the white areas if I have to...!
thanks for being online today and for responding so quickly...

8. Re: how to get rid of white areas on black and white image
Steve Fairbairn May 19, 2014 5:46 PM (in response to Canned Pug)This is a very messy image and maybe a bit difficult to edit. But you should be able to temporarily lock background areas while you delete the little messy bits.
You may need to do a bit of manual editing (redrawing paths like the top of the truck’s roof) to get smooth paths. The Pen tool would be best for that.
Got to go now – it’s long past midnight here!
