JSS1138 Apr 11, 2014 5:12 PM (in response to JBowdach)If you're waiting for the new features, that means you're on CC, which means you have Direct Link to SpeedGrade, which begs the question...why are you using Scene Detect in SG instead of Direct Link?

JBowdach Apr 11, 2014 5:32 PM (in response to JSS1138)Hi Jim,
Because some clients do not provide an XML or EDL for color grading. They simply provide a flat QT ProRes 422 or DNxHD file, which I need to split up. Trust me, I request XMLs and even project files whenever I can, but sometimes this is what I'm requested to do.
Is there a method of using scene detect in Premiere that I am unaware of? I thought it was a feature that needed to be run in Speedgrade w/o direct link.

shooternz Apr 11, 2014 5:38 PM (in response to JBowdach)Are you able to Scene Detect from the flat file...take those out ( via xxxxxx) to a New PPRO Project and then Direct Link back to SG
Not sure what method for xxxxxx would be best.

4. Re: Master Clip Effects and Scene Detect Workflow
JBowdach Apr 11, 2014 5:45 PM (in response to shooternz)Yes, once the scene has been split, I can export an XML (or Premiere Project and open it in Premiere, Resolve, etc (essentially any application that accepts XMLs) and it sees the split scenes no problem. At this point, I essentially have replicated the edit, but in the eyes of the NLE (Premiere in this case), every clips is its own clip, even if they originated from the same original video file. I'm trying to see if there is any way besides manually grouping clips back together?
Regarding the export, I believe XML or Premiere project is the best way to move back and forth. I've had success with both, because Ive not dont any grading at this point, so XML or project seems to work going back to Premiere. Ideally id be using the Premiere Project or look files to take my grading from Speedgrade back to my premiere project, but Id like to resolve this "issue" (not sure what else to call it).
Any suggestions, Jim?

For what purpose? You mentioned PP, so I assumed you were doing the editing.

If you're not working with the original media, I think the Master Clip Effect won't work for you.

JBowdach Apr 11, 2014 7:10 PM (in response to JSS1138)I should clarify: When Im editing the project, there is no issue: I use an all adobe workflow. The issue occurs if I am color grading a project for someone else who edited the project, who did not provide me the project file, an XML or an EDL.

Mark Mapes Apr 11, 2014 8:24 PM (in response to JBowdach)I'm not familiar with how exactly SpeedGrade handles the results of scene detection, so I can't answer directly. But I can explain a bit about PPro's Master Clip Effects. For PPro's purposes, each item in the Project panel is an independent master clip. So if your project has more than one item pointing to the same file on disc, the master clip effects will be independent for each. It doesn't matter whether you imported the clip multiple times or duplicated it or saved subclips from it.
If a master clip has effects applied when you duplicate it or save a subclip, that new master clip will inherit the effects. But after creation-time, any changes you make to the effect of either instance will *not* ripple to the other instances.
Hope that helps...
