Create a comp that is 3.141 times as wide as it is high. Arrange your images inside this comp in the checkerboard pattern. Nest this comp in your main come and apply cc sphere.
Looking carefully at the sample, the images in the grid are flat, not distorted; they are not wrapped around the sphere. This appears to be a simple faux 3D image.
This is just an example, it has not exactly to look like this. Is there not a way to just use a free template for it?
Import a bunch of images into your composition window (resize them to the approximate size you will be using in your comp).
Arrange them in a 2X or so wide as high comp.
Switch on "preserve underlying transparency for all layers
Add a new solid to the bottom of your comp and apply Grid and invert it
Create a new comp using a standard preset like HDTV 29.97
Drag your new 3X wide comp into the standard comp and apply CC Sphere... All Done, no need for a template. Take a close look. This is all you need.
