For the elliptic ring you may:
1) Create the two ellipses (you may start with either and scale a copy larger or smaller);
2) Select both and Object>Compound Path>Make.
Just create the other things in front of the elliptic ring. You may use a white stroke, and it may be beneath the fill (you may also add a stroke through the Appearance palette if you need more than one stroke, ad you may drag things up and down in that pallete).

broomeGirl May 24, 2014 7:00 AM (in response to Jacob Bugge)Thanks Jacob for your help. Actually on further playing what I found was that I had created the 2 ellipses on different layers, so that I could turn off the big one and then draw the smaller on top and this is why it wasn't working.
When I created the 2 ellipses on the same layer and did the send to back and minus back it worked but from there it got ugly .. use of the path eraser has got me in a mess.
Here is where I am up to using your method which worked like a charm. I have added opacity to the object to see the original underneath but not really sure where to go from here. I made the new object transparent 50%.
I tried putting a rectangle on the left and a ellipse of the right and got this far but I dont know how to deal with the corners.
Appreciate your advice

Can you show what happens if you keep everything at 100% opacity and bring everything else in front of the elliptic ring?

broomeGirl May 24, 2014 3:40 PM (in response to Jacob Bugge)Hi thanks for your response, the image behind the new ellipses, are the ellipses I drew with the pen tool which didnt work out so well and I am just tracing over them.

broomeGirl May 24, 2014 3:54 PM (in response to Jacob Bugge)Hi Jacob, I am trying to recreate this logo which was designed more than 20 years ago and the vector format lost. I used a live trace and got most of it but some of it wasnt designed properly in the first place. For instance the two inner half ellipses do not meet correctly. Apologies for the endless questions

8. Re: Trying to emulate this shape
rcraighead May 24, 2014 9:51 PM (in response to broomeGirl)I would draw this with Live Paint. 3 concentric elipses overlayed with the white artwork and 1 horizontal line to split the middle circle. With this shapes converted to Live Paint, just fill the areas with the appropriate color. If you want the white transparent set the color to "none". You're done.
