1. Re: Canon 1DC 4K MJpeg workflow
jbach2 May 26, 2014 6:28 AM (in response to AzzieScott)All depends on your workstation. I edit 4k footage all the time on a 2 yearold iMac .

AzzieScott May 26, 2014 9:47 AM (in response to jbach2)I just dropped my raw 1DC 4k footage into a timeline and it plays choppy. I have to render it for it to play smooth. I thought PP CC had native 4k support?

3. Re: Canon 1DC 4K MJpeg workflow
JSS1138 May 26, 2014 2:58 PM (in response to AzzieScott)It could be a disk drive issue. 4K MJPEG files will likely need a very fast drive system, possibly even a RAID, to work well.

AzzieScott May 27, 2014 7:01 PM (in response to jbach2)If I create a ProRes 4096x2160 file it plays fine at full res, but I thought PPCC could handle native MJPEG files?

Steven L. Gotz May 28, 2014 12:01 AM (in response to AzzieScott)Is the data rate a lot lower on the ProRes file than the MJPEG file?
If so, it could still be a matter of drive speed.
Tell us about your drives and how you have them set up. I assume that Mac has a way to see how hard the drives are working just like a PC does. Take a look at that.

6. Re: Canon 1DC 4K MJpeg workflow
AzzieScott May 28, 2014 4:34 AM (in response to Steven L. Gotz)Data rate on ProRes file is 479.50 and the MJPEG is 496.50 Mbit/s so yes it seems the data rate on the ProRes file is a little lower.
Im using and SSD as my main HD and 2nd Internal 7200 SATA to hold my footage.

7. Re: Canon 1DC 4K MJpeg workflow
Steven L. Gotz May 28, 2014 8:52 AM (in response to AzzieScott)Not a lot lower though.
I don't use a Mac so I don't know if ProRes is easier on the GPU than MJPEG, but if I had to guess I would say that it probably isn't the drive after all. Unless the drive is fragmented and the ProRes file is not in a fragmented area. Hard to say.
I think you need to analyze the drive throughput and GPU as well as CPU capacity. If one or the other is maxed out, the tool you use to look at it should indicate that. I know how it is done on a PC but not on a Mac.

8. Re: Canon 1DC 4K MJpeg workflow
dhuting Jul 16, 2014 9:25 AM (in response to AzzieScott)have you had any luck completing some exports in 4k from your 1dc footage? what did you end up doing? My new Mac Pro is failing with the native MJPEG 4k files even though its a brand new mac pro!! Premiere pro CC and CS6 either freeze or crash. I'm thinking I'm going to need to transcode to pro-res, just trying to figure out what codec to ensure no quality loss! Please help!
