1. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
Jeffrey_Smith Jun 4, 2014 7:10 AM (in response to anssikumpula)Unless there are functions of a pressure sensitivity pen that I am unaware, without a brush tool, there really isn't a big need for this interface. As for handwritten text, you can use a font like Caflisch Script Pro with contextual alternatives to create a more natural look.

anssikumpula Jun 4, 2014 7:32 AM (in response to Jeffrey_Smith)Thanks for the type recommendation – looks like there's one weight available in Typekit. About original problem, I don't understand why variable width strokes with brush tool and Wacom should be made in Illustrator or Photoshop only and then Place or copy&paste to InDesign, rather than just use brush tool inside InDesign.
Is there a reason? There is pen tool, why not brush?

3. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
Steve Werner Jun 4, 2014 7:42 AM (in response to anssikumpula)Most people don't expect to do variable brush strokes in InDesign, and I don't. Variable brush strokes are used for creating vector art effects, not for creating publications. There are lots of vector art tools in Illustrator which aren't matched in InDesign. There are lots of tools for working with images in Photoshop. I don't expect that all of those tools should be shoehorned into InDesign.

4. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
anssikumpula Jun 4, 2014 8:00 AM (in response to Steve Werner)Just to explain my use case, I do shorter publications, like 1 to 26 pages long. From all the Adobe tools InDesign I love the most when working – mostly because with quick keyboard shortcuts I can see just the final publication size, bleed or the whole content; use master pages and place links. I'm not after raster effects that can be done in Photoshop, or complex vector effects that can be done in Illustrator. I do simple vector graphics that enhance small publications, so I don't need any "lots of vector art tools in Illustrator" but rather simple – simple as dynamically variable width from my Wacom. InDesign is not for just placing content and I would be happy just with pressure sensitive pen.

5. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
Jeffrey_Smith Jun 4, 2014 8:23 AM (in response to anssikumpula)Caflisch Script Pro with contextual alternatives (with the option turned on in Indesign) will use different looking characters to simulate a more natural feel, not necessarily use different weights. As an example, the word "feel, the first "e" can look different than the second "e". This is one feature that Indesign uses with open type fonts to create a varied look with text.

6. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
anssikumpula Jun 4, 2014 8:29 AM (in response to Jeffrey_Smith)Thanks, contextual alternatives are familiar to me but I'm needing a thick font where Caflisch Script Pro Regular isn't suitable. Contextual alternatives are cool indeed, and I do understand all text is better as real text – especially with screenreading devices and software – but my original problem relates to making simple dynamic variable width strokes straight inside InDesign without roundtripping to Illustrator.

BobLevine Jun 4, 2014 8:31 AM (in response to anssikumpula)Don’t tell us, tell Adobe. But you need to make a very strong case for it so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting:

That can be argued for any single one of all the available tools in both Photoshop and Illustrator.
Apart from the pretty niche application of drawing variable thickness lines, I can't really think of anything *else* support a pressure sensitive pad/pen would add to InDesign. Make text BOLDER by pushing extra hard?

I think desire to draw naturally variable thickness lines instead of fixed width is not that niche phenomenon – even in InDesign.

10. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
John Mensinger Jun 4, 2014 9:56 AM (in response to anssikumpula)While your point is not lost on me, I think "if Illustrator can do it, why can't InDesign?" is somewhat a reversal of logic. If all the Adobe apps shared all their capabilities, it wouldn't be a "suite" of apps, but one big, bloated multi-purpose behemoth with more overhead than anyone needs to do whatever their work entails. My retort would be, "if Illustrator can do it, then why would you need InDesign to do it?" InDesign is indeed intended to be thee environment for mixing type with products of Photoshop, Illustrator, and other apps. It won't surprise me if there is never pressure-sensitive support added to InDesign. It's simply already covered in the intended Adobe integral workflow.

11. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
anssikumpula Jun 4, 2014 9:59 AM (in response to John Mensinger)So why can you draw a fixed width line in InDesign? Why isn't that done in Illustrator?

12. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
John Mensinger Jun 4, 2014 10:11 AM (in response to anssikumpula)Well sure, there are "hairs to split" due to overlap of certain basic functions; but pressure sensitivity is far from a basic feature.
The correct argument here would be that as a page layout tool, InDesign offers a rudimentary vector drawing tool set, as the addition of fixed-width rules and shapes is a very common page layout task.

anssikumpula Jun 4, 2014 11:08 AM (in response to John Mensinger)[--] pressure sensitivity is far from a basic feature.
So answer to the question "Is pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign, and why it's not there at the moment?" could be it's too complicated feature and probably never coming to InDesign as InDesign is primary a page layout app.
Well that's fair enough. Though, I'll keep hoping pressure sensitivity is not that hard of a problem.

14. Re: Is Wacom pressure sensitivity ever coming to InDesign?
Jeffrey_Smith Jun 4, 2014 11:49 AM (in response to anssikumpula)Perhaps when Adobe releases the ipad version of Indesign or a page layout mobile app there'll be pressure sensitive capability.

BobLevine Jun 4, 2014 11:59 AM (in response to Jeffrey_Smith)Based on the demo I saw for the next version of Photoshop on the Surface Pro 3, that day may be here sooner than you think.
