    Missing Effects and Transitions?

    MonkeyEatsMonkey Community Member

This is from the "What's New" section of the help file for CC2014.  Granted, a lot of these transitions look cheesy.  But sometimes that's exactly what a project needs!  So... can someone from Adobe offer some insight here?

          No more star wipe???!!!  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo..............

Instead of just removing a bunch of transitions, they could have given us a few new ones that are actually useful, no?!  Film Impact has some great transitions that I use all the time, such as a Push transition that has adjustable blur, ease in and ease out, the way an intelligent transition should be!  But unfortunately, it isn't GPU accelerated and doesn't work properly for making presets.  I can't help but wonder how great it would be for such great transitions to be added to Premiere natively so they could be GPU accelerated and work properly when turned into presets!

            Hi M.E.M.,

We have the product improvement program and can check the usage of a certain effect. Star Wipe probably didn't get a lot of use, so it was deprecated. It's part of software development to remove features that don't get used much as it takes effort to maintain that feature in new software code. Sorry about that.

You can always keep your current version of Premiere Pro CC installed if you need that effect.

            Thanks,
            Kevin

              Hi Pierre,

Even Simpsons made fun of "Star Wipe," but I understand the lament. I think it would be a good feature request to update the set of transitions. Feel free to do so.

              Thanks,

              Kevin

Yeah, I get it, but why eat hamburger when you can have steak?

Apparently the effects still exist within this version of Premiere.  You just can't get to them from this version of Premiere.

                From the help file:

Deprecated effects do not appear in the Effects panel, and cannot be applied in this version of Premiere Pro. However, if you open a project created in an older version of Premiere Pro with deprecated effects, you can still see the deprecated effects. When you select a clip with the deprecated effect in the Timeline, the Effects Control panel shows the effect with fully functional controls to adjust the effects.

They're still there, you just have to import them from a project created with the previous version of Premiere!

So I decided to test this out.  I made a new project in Premiere CC and applied an "Iris Star" transition.  Then I created a new project in Premiere CC2014 and imported my CC project with the Iris Star transition into it.  Sure enough the transition was there, and it even had the effect parameters from the previous version (border width, color, invert).  Same functionality that was in CC.

                Capture.JPG

Unfortunately, wasn't able to save the transition as a preset.

But I WAS able to save the effects!

It's basically the same process, but you're able to save the effect as a user preset using the drop-down menu in the effects panel.  I did this with the "Bend" effect, and was even able to use it after starting an entirely new project with CC2014.  I would imagine all you have to do is repeat this process with the rest of the deprecated effects.

                Check it.

Okay, so now on to the reasoning behind this whole thing.  The help file states that Adobe wants the Mac and PC versions to be consistent, and that these effects/transitions were only on the PC version of Premiere.  So instead of adding the effects/transitions to the Mac version, they took them away from the PC version.  Well... kind of.

I get it.  I know you want a seamless experience for your cross-platform users.  I totally agree with that notion and I think it's a good thing.  But don't take stuff away from us.  Give the Mac users the effects!  If all anybody used were the most popular effects, it'd be a pretty dull world.  And I don't know about you, but I want to live in a world with star wipes.

                  That sounds like Adobe.
