Mike Gondek2 Mar 23, 2011 6:08 AM (in response to toymaker1)Edit >> Select all
Edit >> Copy
Edit >> Paste in Front
Pathfinder >> Unite
Then you can offset path if needed

toymaker1 Mar 23, 2011 6:34 AM (in response to Mike Gondek2)Thanks Mike.
Unfortunately, I dont full understand what you mean. For example, I copied/pasted in front, then applied pathfinder Unite command, the tried path/offset path. - every line in the design is offset, but I want one line all the way around the whole design.
Am I doing something incorrectly?

3. Re: Boundary line around image.
Mike Gondek2 Mar 23, 2011 6:40 AM (in response to toymaker1)After you united, the result should have been one path, being the outer shape of everything.
Maybe you have a compound shape or something else, that would be better explained with a screenshot. You can use the camera icon left of the smiley face to post an image.

Katrina12345 Mar 23, 2011 6:52 AM (in response to toymaker1)Why not just draw a box, center it on your art using the numbers in the transform box, and then make it large enough for your design to fit inside of it?

Hello Mike.
This is the drawing I want a boundary around, so it can be laser cut.
Thanks.

toymaker1 Mar 23, 2011 8:05 AM (in response to Katrina12345)Hallo Katrina
I dont want a rectangle frame around the image, I want a path that follows the outside of the image shape exactly, so that I get a cutting line, without the interior part of the design.
Laser cutters need a single path to cut, the interior part of the design will just be a printed design, which is cut out by laser. In CoredlDraw, you just use the boundary command, and it instantly creates a lovely clean line right around the design.
regards.

Jacob Bugge Mar 23, 2011 8:50 AM (in response to toymaker1)Peter,
The first link leads to the cafe page with the photo; the other one seems to be a dead end. No drawing, no image, in sight.

Jesseham Mar 23, 2011 10:34 AM (in response to toymaker1)Your link isn't attaching, but I think I know what you're looking for.
Group everything you want outlined, select the group, open your appearance panel (if it isn't already) and from the flyout menu "Add New Stroke"
You can then select that stroke by clicking on it in the appearance panel and apply an offset (or any other effect or effects) to it. If you want it offset, you'll also have to effect -> pathfinder -> add it, to make it all one shape instead of outlines of all the components.
Note that for this method, the offset command needs to be Effect -> Path -> Offset Path, not the one under the object menu.
Depending on how your laser software works, you may need to Object -> Expand Appearance to "render" it out as it's own separate object.
More info on the awesome power of the appearance panel here, here and here.

toymaker1 Mar 23, 2011 12:01 PM (in response to Jesseham)Thanks Jesseham.
I dont know if I am missing something, but something really odd has happened.
I followed your instructions, and the result was brilliant, just what I required.
But then I noticed that the offset path around the image did not seem to really exist - that is to say, it would print, but I could not select it. I need to select it to give it an individual file identity that I can use for the laser cutter.
It appears to be just a line with no file identity - it does not appear in the layers panel as a separate object,
I did not know that such behavour could exist in illustrator.
Is it possible to convert it to a path? - I would need to select it to do that.
Thanks.
Regards
Peter.

Larry G. Schneider Mar 23, 2011 1:17 PM (in response to toymaker1)Simply select the offset path line in the Appearance panel and Object>Expand Appearance.

toymaker1 Mar 23, 2011 3:19 PM (in response to Larry G. Schneider)Thanks for your help Larry, and the others who helped me.
I have now worked out how to create a beautiful, clean boundary around my designs, so they can be laser cut in one piece.
Brilliant!

Peter.

I am also facing the same problem, can you please explain how you created a boundary of an image?

Sajid Attar Jul 2, 2014 9:19 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Yes Monika,
I think that is for vector image, I am asking about the raster image if it possible to create a boundary around a raster image if there is no background.

19. Re: Boundary line around image.
Monika Gause Jul 3, 2014 2:10 AM (in response to Sajid Attar)It's possible.
But depending on what you need the boundary line for, it might not be advisable to use the automatic method. Do you perhaps need it for plotting (cutting with a knife)?

20. Re: Boundary line around image.
Sajid Attar Jul 3, 2014 9:36 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Yes exactly, it will be a cutting guideline.

Monika Gause Jul 4, 2014 6:38 AM (in response to Sajid Attar)Then you should take the pen tool and draw it manually.

22. Re: Boundary line around image.
Sajid Attar Jul 4, 2014 10:05 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Yes, but I was looking for some auto created boundary, because if there will be let say 50 images, then it will be time consuming process.
by the way there is a method to create a boundary automatic with the combination of Ps. and Ai.
thanks everybody

23. Re: Boundary line around image.
Monika Gause Jul 5, 2014 5:31 AM (in response to Sajid Attar)In Photoshop you could convert a selection to a path and then make this path a clipping mask. Place in AI and embed and there you go.
In Illustrator you can apply a stroke to the image and apply the effect "Outline object" to it. Then expand appearance.
Good luck with cutting these paths.
