1. Re: Insert Edit and Overwrite Edit Crashes This One Premiere Project
seanmics Jul 10, 2014 2:34 PM (in response to lukerr!)I'm having the same issue. Keyboard shortcuts and buttons give me an error message that Premiere Pro can't perform function and that it will try to save the project before it crashes.
This is a BIG DEAL. This is one of the most basic edit functions and dragging the clip into the timeline wastes time that I don't have! This is unacceptable. Why am I paying for a service that doesn't work??? If this doesn't get fixed I will have to switch to AVID.

lukerr! Jul 10, 2014 3:16 PM (in response to seanmics)I wonder if disabling GPU acceleration will do anything. It seemed to help these folks. https://forums.adobe.com/message/6531737
The only thing is that I can' t find how to disable GPU acceleration. Seemed like there was a check box in CS6, I can't find it in CC.

lukerr! Jul 10, 2014 4:02 PM (in response to lukerr!)Disable GPU is in Project settings, and that didn't work either. Very frustrating. Going to transcode the footage and edit in fcp7. Very disappointed in Premiere at the moment.

Geoffrey Beane Aug 11, 2014 11:00 AM (in response to lukerr!)Guess folks haven't figured out what's up here, huh? Out of the blue, I've started to experience crashes when trying to do inserts and edits. Both via keyboard shortcuts and via menu commands. Wasn't any issue at all for the 8 months since I started using Premiere CC, and now it is all of a sudden. Total mystery.

Mark Mapes Aug 11, 2014 10:02 PM (in response to Geoffrey Beane)Exactly what version of Premiere is each of you running? (This is an essential data point that you should always include.)
Does this happen regardless of the type of clip, or is it limited to specific file types? To merged clips? Subclips?
If it's limited to merged clips and you're on 2014.0.0 (aka, 8.0.0), then you may be hitting the same issue discussed in this thread: serious error using merged clips. That bug was fixed in 2014.0.1.

Geoffrey Beane Aug 12, 2014 5:46 AM (in response to Mark Mapes)Thanks for the response, Mark. And giving the version makes sense...an obvious oversight on my part
Anyway, I was running 2014 and I actually ended up uninstalling and then reinstalling. Guessing that I was at 2014.0.0, but now I have 2014.0.1. Since doing that, I haven't experienced the crashes. And, yes, it was with merged clips.
HOWEVER, I still can't target audio only and insert/overwrite merged clips without jumping through a couple hoops. Works fine if I'm targeting video only with merged clips, or if I'm targeting audio only with any kind of clip (merged or non-merged). But audio only with merged? No deal.
In order to make that work, I have to go to the merged clip in the project window, select Modify, and then futz with the the audio channels. See screen shot below. Audio tracks 1 and 2 are from my DSLR. Tracks 3 and 4 are my "good" audio. Is this something that I should need to do for each merged clip to make them work?

Geoffrey Beane Aug 12, 2014 5:49 AM (in response to Geoffrey Beane)To clarify one thing I wrote inaccurately above...
Works fine if I'm targeting video only with merged clips, or if I'm targeting audio only with any kind of clip (merged or non-merged). But audio only with merged? No deal.
Should have written:

8. Re: Insert Edit and Overwrite Edit Crashes This One Premiere Project
Mark Mapes Aug 12, 2014 11:39 AM (in response to Geoffrey Beane)I was just about to report that I couldn't repro any problem inserting/overwriting only the audio from a merged clip when I stumbled on the key: Insert/Overwrite fails if:
- source is a merged clip
- no video track is targeted, and A1 is untargeted.
So a possible workaround is to leave A1 targeted and then delete the unwanted content on that track. Of course, that might be problematic if A1 already contains audio that you don't want to mess with.
Thanks for calling this issue to our attention.

Geoffrey Beane Aug 12, 2014 12:55 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)Yeah, targeting A1 definitely would be problematic. Modifying the source clips as I mention above isn't too huge a hassle, but it's definitely not optimal. I'm just glad I happened to stumble on that as a solution - it certainly wasn't intuitive. I was just trying anything as a workaround.
Cheers, GB
