how to best configure sata

I would like to configure a new 64 bit computer with 3 hard drives and need to know the configuration for the SATA control that will work best with premiere pro. I don't seem to be able to get to support (phone). I have heard it is best to keep your OS on a separate port (channel, cable) than the media drive. With all the options that you have for locations for scratch disc, rendered files, projects, etc. I expect more information for system set up than the generic I find for Premiere Pro CC.

Is there someone that can help me out here? My Dell T3610 CTO has an Intel AHCI chipset SATA controller 2x6Gb/s, 4x 3.0Gb/s-SW RAID 0/1/5/10.

Besides the hard drives (3) I will be needing a channel for MOTU 828 FireWire Audio interface and a Blue Disc Burner. I have no idea of the best way to configure this hardware with the above controller to get optimal performance.

Please advise.

My 3 hard drives for video editing are configured as...
.
1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and ALL program installs (2)
.
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 paging swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folders and files
.
3 - 1Terabyte data for all video files... input source & output export files (1)
.
(1) for faster input/output if you have 4 drives
- use drive 3 for all source files
- use drive 4 for all output files
.
(2) only 70Gig used, for Win7 & CS5 MC & MS Office & other smaller programs

Thank you John,

That is good information and helps a lot to show how to manage your data from drive to drive. However, you didn't mention the SATA configuration. Do you have separate channel for drive 1? What about the 2nd and 3rd drive?

Please advise.

Each of my drives is connected to a Sata port on the motherboard... I have no idea if my motherboard Sata ports are on different "channels"

John, you are not alone. I am seeking knowledge for SATA configuration as well. I was told during an Avid tutorial that you should have your media on a different drive and channel (essentially a separate cable). Dell sent me a new Precision T3610 with two drive cages, but the same cable was connected to both (same motherboard port). I sent it back because I needed space for at least 3 if not 4. Now I'm trying to determine how to configure the replacement system and I can't find much info.

The link above Tweakers Page - Disk Setup set by cc_merchant is loaded with great information. (Thanks cc_merchant). I'm still reading through it! But I see no mention of using a separate port for your media drive, not to mention optical burner.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I'm no expert, but I have been told if you are using the same cable then it is on the same channel, and those drives are connected to the same motherboard port.

That sounds like a perfect arrangement. I'm curious who set this up for you. That person seems to know the answers to my questions. Best of luck to your fine tuned system.

I built it myself... Adobe Notes based on my budget at that time

Next build will be just a "bit" faster... see message 6 Samsung 840 Pro SSD to become Sata6 ??? sometime after we sell our house and build final house
