1. Re: PP CC 2014 Gets Extremely slow the larger my project gets on a new Mac Pro
aeveringham Jul 21, 2014 8:45 AM (in response to GWVideo)What version of Premiere Pro do you have? I'm on a PC with the Creative Cloud 2014 update and as of updating to 2014 version I seem to be experiencing similar choppy playback issues. I haven't tried re-installing the program yet but even when my timeline is fully rendered things don't play smoothly. Occasionally Some clips don't even show up when I drag the playback head over it. I have to make an adjustment to the file, re-render and then it might play.

I'm betting you're running out of memory and page faulting. Unfortunately, 12GB of RAM is really not a lot. You ideally want 32GB; 64GB would be even better. Given that it slows down the longer your video gets further leads to believe it's a memory issue.
To verify my suspicion, start an editing cycle and open the Activity Monitor. Switch over to the Memory tab and watch the "Swap Used" row at the bottom of the window. If it starts climbing much over, well, 0, then you're running out of physical RAM and need more.

4. Re: PP CC 2014 Gets Extremely slow the larger my project gets on a new Mac Pro
aeveringham Jul 21, 2014 10:59 AM (in response to jasonvp)I just reinstalled PP on my PC, and it seems to be having choppy playback still. My computer has an 8 core i7 processor, 64 GB's of ram and an Nvidia GTX670 which makes me think my hardware isn't the issue with this problem unless there's something I'm overlooking. When playing the timeline with the CPU/Memory monitor up it uses about 20% of my CPU and upwards of 14 GB's of ram (my system was idling around 10gb's before playing). I have ~58gb's of ram available for PP to use total.
In my project I have .mov's, after effects comps, and .mts files. Is it possible that the mixing of file types is causing a hang up? I don't recall having this problem before hand.

I can't answer your question. You don't appear to be having the same problem as the OP; they very clearly stated that the slow down gets worse as the project gets bigger. To me, that means resources are being used up in some way.

Sorry about that. You say you work in a team environment. Are you with CC for Teams or do each of you have individual licenses?
- Do you work with networked drives? How does the project work if media is on local drives?
- Do you have a deep organization system where the media is in a folder inside a folder, inside a folder, etc.? What happens if you simplify naming conventions and folder organization?
- Do you use long names for your clips and sequences? What happens if you try shorter clips names and sequences.
- Do you store the preview files and media cache database locally and on a fast drive? If not, move these files to a local drive.
- Does the audio sample rate match sequence settings precisely? Mismatched settings can cause performance issues.
- Do you use the Warp Stabilizer effect liberally? The project can bloat if too many Warp Stabilizer effects are added.
- Is the project file migrated from an earlier version of Premiere Pro? Never update a project file to a new version of Premiere Pro. Remain on the current version until that project is complete.
If so, any or all of these items could be the root cause(s) of the problem for poor performance. Do some tests and post back about your findings.
Thanks,

8. Re: PP CC 2014 Gets Extremely slow the larger my project gets on a new Mac Pro
Kevin-Monahan Jul 21, 2014 12:16 PM (in response to jasonvp)Hi Jason,
I heard from support and they said a major cause of issues like this are when users update the project file from CC to CC 2014. We are not recommending this workflow. If you have a CC or CS6 project, do not update the project to CC 2014. Remain with the CC version until that project is complete. Only work in CC 2014 projects begun in CC 2014.
Thanks,

GWVideo Jul 21, 2014 12:19 PM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)This project was updated from CC. Is it possible to start a new project in CC 2014 and then import a sequence from CC? Or will this cause similar issues?

That's interesting to note. I have a couple of "Template" files I use for Pr that I originally created in Pr CC, not 2014. I've since converted them using Pr 2014, and haven't run into those same slow downs.

Kevin-Monahan Jul 21, 2014 2:29 PM (in response to jasonvp)Good to hear, Jason.
GWVideo,
Updating a project should work, and most of the time does, but the causes of all the issues we are getting via Support are project specific or from migrating projects from one version to another. So, you can try importing a sequence from a previous version, but I would be remiss if I didn't warn you about the issue.I recall in trade school years ago, I was told to never update a project to a new version and to finish the project in the existing version. Then, I taught that R.O.T. to my own students when I became an instructor. This protocol still seems to be good practice.
Hope that helps.
Thanks,

15. Re: PP CC 2014 Gets Extremely slow the larger my project gets on a new Mac Pro
GWVideo Jul 21, 2014 2:36 PM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)Working better, ordered more ram, that was clearly the major issue. I will avoid updating a CC file to CC 2014. One question unanswered is can I import a sequence from a CC project into a CC 2014 project and avoid the issue of converting a CC to a CC 2014 file?

I'm pretty sure it's possible to run into the same issues. However, you can duplicate your project file and do a test. In general, it should work.

Hi,
there is a issue on Windows with editing Pro Res mov footage.......
If you are editing Prores often, try buying this Pro Res codec for Windows:
